The NEH has announced their most recent #humanities grants and I have been awarded a NEH-Mellon Fellowship for Digital Publication! This provides me with a year of funding for my project for research, writing, and illustration leading to a web-based visualization of the World Heritage site of Tiwanaku, in Bolivia, during the Late Formative period (200 BC to 600 BCE).1/5#archaeology #SciArt #DigitalHumanities #Illustration

What if you could draw everything? Instead of being restricted to just one archaeological reconstruction in which you try to cram in everything, averaging and homogenizing large chunks of time, removing nuance and interpretive uncertainty…2/6

(they’re hunting! but also processing the kill! and look!, the feast has already started! and someone in the back has grabbed a moment to make some pots! and…)…what if you had the time and funds to draw it all, many times and many ways, the space to explore alternatives, the room to show different scales? This fellowship is gifting me the chance to find out, to create and realize my dream archaeological illustration project.3/6

Thank you to my project collaborators, @roddick_a, Julio Condori Amaru, Alexei Vranich, and Erik Marsh, for embracing my experimental approach. More thanks to @rajoyce and Lisa Trever for supporting my application, and to sounding boards @clmorgan, Sara Perry, and the Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship at McMaster University.4/6

The current plan is to use Obsidian with my collaborators to collect and visually interpret published and unpublished data on the Tiwanaku Late Formative. The final website will use the Omeka publishing platform by Digital Scholar with Neatline, now maintained by Performant Soft. 5/6

There is much more to come but the last year has been hard and I’m going to take some time to bask in this brightness. I’ll eventually be sharing updates on social media as I go along. Signing up for my email list and newsletter will guarantee you long ramblings on exploratory and explanatory visualizations. https://www.killackeyillustration.com/contact6/6

@kjkillackey is Obsidian supporting remote collaboration?

@nrchtct I’ll let @roddick_a weigh in with the details, but we have a vault stored in his Dropbox that syncs changes.

@nrchtct @kjkillackey yes. You can pay for obsidian sync or do what we are doing with a Dropbox folder as vault. Occasional minor sync conflicts but otherwise super easy.

@inti thanks Matt. It’s great to be working (virtually) in the altiplano again!
