And suddenly this afternoon I read something about Vorbis and I was like "how does MP3 compare?"

@halfa Probably depends on the codec.

Turns out that MP3 may be the most supported format, but it's a bit old at this point and we can do better now! Opus is an evolution of Ogg Vorbis that easily beats MP3 at comparable bitrate in perceived quality, and compare to other standards like AAC (from Apple) http://listening-test.coresv.net/results.htm

It also has lower coding latency, which is why it is used by https://www.mumble.info/ for example (OSS VoIP group chat, like TeamSpeak)

So I quickly copied over the 30GB (~4400 tracks) MP3 320kbps CBR that I had on the phone, and started to make a new folder with a mix of MP3 320 and FLAC files for re-encoding with Foobar2000

Result: 30GB of MP3 320 are now 17.5GB of Ogg Opus 128kbps VBR, with likely very little perceptible difference in quality (especially over bluetooth AAC). And I even got 500MB back by resizing the embeded covers with this wonderful f2k add-on that even supports webp (which apparently Poweramp on Android SHOULD be able to read) https://marc2k3.github.io/fb2k-archive/cover-resizer/

If you're curious (or clueless) about opus, there are a few recommandations for bitrate on the xiph website https://wiki.xiph.org/Opus_Recommended_Settings

They say that for stereo audio, 128kbps is close to being the point of diminishing return for music (even if apparently people recommend 192kbps VBR Opus to match 320kbps MP3)

I usually carry around 30GB of MP3 music on my phone, but on my 64GB Pixel 3 it was getting cramped... I have been fighting for almost a year with less than a GB left
