Really great points in here about cyclists and stop lights/signs: “Idaho legalized what the vast majority of folks on bikes were already doing. But here’s the wild thing: It also reduced the amount of bike accidents at intersections. It made things safer for everyone, including cars.” – @clive https://clivethompson.medium.com/why-cyclists-love-the-idaho-stop-fbc2555b9e9e #cycling #bikes #traffic

@stribley Also, here's a "Friend" link for anyone who's not a Medium subscriber: https://clivethompson.medium.com/why-cyclists-love-the-idaho-stop-fbc2555b9e9e?sk=6c610fd0e5701ab58283cc5e526e8e92

@stribley @clive Here's what motorists simply don't get: the only way to make things safe for cyclists is to avoid any interaction with motorists, and the reason for that has nothing to do with the cyclists or bicycles themselves, and has everything to do with motorists not recognizing bicycles as vehicles, and not following the rules of the road when cyclists are around. We have to break the rules to save our lives, only because motorists don't respect our right of way and disobey traffic laws.

@ned @clive @stribley Exactly. Going on red and even riding on the sidewalk - they’re to be safe out of a vehicle’s range, rather than for shits and giggles.

@adamshutes @ned @stribley Yep, that's precisely the rationale with the Idaho stop -- it allows for cyclists to get through an intersection during a red if the coast is clear, so that when the light turns green the cars that are starting to move will have fewer cyclists to navigate around, and vice versa

@stribley @clive Oregon has a version of the Idaho stop: those riding bikes can treat stop signs and blinking red lights as yields. #IdahoStop

@stribley @clive it has always been intuitive to me that this is the case. I don't roll stop signs and jump red lights to get going faster, I do it to minimize conflict points with cars.If I jump a red (after a stop and careful assessment of safety), I can often completely remove any interaction with cars in the intersection. If I wait, I need to watch for left and right turners from three different directions, all who intersect my path, and who may not expect to see me in the intersection.

@krang @Josalyn @stribley Yeah, same here, I have long been doing a version of this in New York City without realizing that it had been formalized into law in several other states!

@stribley @clive This brief history of the illegality of "jaywalking" also helps to put things in perspective. Corporate lobbyists have been victim-blaming active transportation users for so long: https://www.grunge.com/721704/the-truth-about-how-jaywalking-became-a-crime/

@ned @stribley That's a good post -- and Peter Norton's book "Fighting Traffic" is an amazing history of how that all went down
