@shaman this raises the question that I hadnβt considered, until just now: if new layers of sediment are constantly piling up, by the conservation of matter, are they commensurately being dug out of somewhere else I feel like a pretty much only exclusively see layers piling up. Except near rivers or something but that seems to be too much of an edge effect to explain the layers piling up everywhere that is not a river.Yes, I could Google this, but Iβm not doing that.

@shaman Downpatrick Head is a #rock formation that stands just off the west coast of #Ireland. This sea stack, DΓΊn Briste (its Gaelic name) means broken fort. It stands at 38.5 metres above the sea, an intricate, layered display of geological #history.#Mosstodon #LichenSubscribe #Nature #Photography #AltText

@shaman Dun Briste and the surrounding cliffs were formed around 350 million years ago (during the 'Lower Carboniferous Period'), when sea temperatures were much higher and the coastline at a greater distance away. There are many legends describing how the Sea Stack was formed but it is widely accepted that an arch leading to the rock collapsed during very rough sea conditions in 1393. This is remarkably recent in geological terms.

@shaman estimating human kind: some idiot human will find some idiot reason to take this rock down within the next 20 years. Why: when nice people show pictures of special natural phenomena, there are always idiots who want to change that, destroy it, demystify it, replace it by concrete and glass.

@shaman there is only around 6,000 years in that picture tops. the lie of geology is that our world is millions/billions of years old, when the observed phenomena and fossil records can be better explained by the caused by the biblical flood
