Never mind you can't ski in the Alps this winter. Think about the empty rivers in spring and all the failed harvests this summer all over Europe.

@LeonEoW Precisely because hydro has good years and bad year, more than half a century ago, Switzerland inaugurated its first atomic power stations.Nuclear has the added benefit (recognized as early as 1958) of not emitting CO₂, thus reducing the risks of climate disruption ; and it insulates against energy blackmail, because laying in a supply of fuel sufficient for several years is easy. But people decided it was bad, and found reasons to justify opposing it…https://man-and-atom.tumblr.com/tagged/switzerland

@dch @LeonEoW I lived in California for much of my life (wetter years and deep into the drought without end until I left) and it appalled me how many people wanted it to never rain because they had come to live there for the endless summer weather.Completely baffling.I didn't grow up on a farm but in the woods and saw the way weather and seasons influenced and impacted the world around me. It was bizarre to learn how many folks have no clue about that.

@publius @LeonEoW so stop flying and consuming, so the reactors get some water to cool them.

@tiiners @LeonEoW Palo Verde in Arizona, which is both the largest nuclear station, and the largest steam station of any kind, in the USA, with 3 units of 1300 MW each, is cooled by municipal wastewater (treated sewage) from the city of Phoenix. It was originally planned for 5 units, and the supply of cooling water is entirely adequate for that purpose, even at an outdoor temperature of 45°C.

@tiiners @LeonEoW Also, I may note that, for instance, the nuclear power station Beznau in Switzerland (2x365 MW) delivers part of its "waste" heat into district heating networks which serve the surrounding communities. Even in a warm winter, this is still in demand.(Technically speaking, the heat from Beznau is about 7/8ths waste : 1 kWh of electricity is given up for each 8 kWh of heat delivered.)
