@CoQ_10 @RehnSturm256 It's hard to explain what I think about all this but I will say at the time they made the decision to expand special operations (around 2008, IIRC) the quality of line combat units was actually very high. They were still riding the wave of post-9/11 enlistments, had more good quality young men than they knew what to do with, and there were lots of experienced young NCOs to keep things running smoothly. Possibly it was the best shape the US military had been in since Vietnam.I think the special operations expansion was more about a changing mission priority, away from direct combat operations -- which regular combat units are far better at than special operations -- and toward psychological operations, hearts and minds, sneaky squirrel bullshit etc. I think the idea of special operations as this scalpel the leadership could directly wield was a lot more appealing than messy full blown deployments of combat brigades.I don't have good evidence other than my gut feeling and what I've seen from vetbro SF types in the last 5-6 years but it looks to me like the quality of special operations was seriously damaged during the expansion. Which probably doesn't matter much to leadership since they can still be used as desired, even if they're not as effective as they used to be.

@deprecated_ii @CoQ_10 @RehnSturm256 This - I am not one of those guys but my friends who are all say that the regular units lost really good guys to the bloated SF units rather than what happens, dudes can't go SF until their second enlistment, experienced SF guys will go back to the Rangers or other line units in leadership positions, etc. Add to that the fact that the USASF mission completely changed from force multiplier to door kicker and finally compare 1950-2000 deployment schedules and mission types to 2000-present and it's not surprising because they literally get away with murder

A book I read long ago about elite troops in WWII concluded they were a bad idea, they tended to get used up unwisely, and denied the regulars of men who’d be better used as NCOs.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @deprecated_ii As a former conventional soldier I have some mixed feelings on SOF. I’ve never been in a SOF unit, just infantry line units, so take it with a grain of salt, I guess. I think there is a real need for specialized units, but they can absolutely be misused. I think the true mission of SF (unconventional warfare/foreign internal defense, etc.) definitely requires an elite force because your regular infantry unit has so many inexperienced and immature soldiers that the NCOs have their hands full just managing their Joes that they won’t be able to effectively train/mentor a partner force. But they definitely rob Peter to pay Paul, and send a message to conventional troops that they’re inferior and not deserving of better training and missions.

@AntonChigurh @deprecated_ii One problem we can see here is that outside of the “big” and now former theaters of Afghanistan and Iraq it seems natural to prosecute the “Global War on Terror” against small groups with small groups of our men, which naturally matches the organization of our Special Forces, including deployment of self-sustaining units in much smaller increments.The executive branch also wants these nasty jobs which are done in lots of places without creating excessive drama (besides what they do when they crow about … well lately that’s been “jihadist we’ve never heard about”).OK, we’ve got to have larger formations keeping Syria from accessing its oil and gas fields, but otherwise … plus I’d expect the Special Forces community or its leadership to view this as a turf issue, regulars need not apply.And, yeah, I’ve also constantly read regulars don’t get enough ammo or time to become really proficient with their weapons, while Special Forces generally don’t have this problem. The executive and legislative branches probably also look at this through an expenses lens.
