@deprecated_ii I-joists. Not shitty, actually amazing. There seems to be a disconnect with non builders as to the quality of engineered materials. I-joists for example are lighter, stronger, more stiff and cheaper than dimensional lumber.

@deprecated_ii Not at all. Why would that be the case? Again, people who aren't in the industry have a misconception about materials and why they came about to begin with. They've been memed on with OSB is cardboard and American homes are poor quality. Which, the latter is true mostly because the spics slamming everything together do a shitty job.OSB for example was fabricated to resist lateral forces. It is a structural member of the home even though it's a sheet good. Took the place of the very tedious inlet lateral bracing and wood lathe that made up the exterior sheathing. Saves time, money and material. The composites, resins and glues that are used in engineered materials are the only real innovations in the construction industry of this century but they're worth their weight in gold.

@Jerkuleez Engineering composites and synthetics are always theoretically wonderful but in practice, they do not last as long as properly-used natural (or close derivative) materials. There are applications where the tradeoff is fine for various reasons -- maybe you can't do it without the composite, or maybe shelf stability is less of a concern than wear resistance -- but if *longevity* is a concern, composites and synthetics should be avoided.Solid, dry wood lasts centuries with no special treatment. Glues fail in a few decades.

@deprecated_ii Even animal hide glue, which is cometely organic, can last 5 decades on an unstressed joint. Adhesives available today can absolutely last a century unless exposed to the elements. Standard dimensional lumber has very real structural limitations. Laminated strand lumber and laminated veneer lumber can overcome these limitations quite easily because of their composition. Plus, and this is huge to builders, all these products are flat, square and uniform.

@Jerkuleez Builders use this crap because they can build faster and cheaper, it's as simple as that. It's not about making a better product and they don't care if a house is falling apart in 40 years.Neither you, nor anybody else, actually understands the long term behavior of modern adhesives because there hasn't been a "long term" yet. However the way to bet is they will degrade from exposure to air and/or internal decomposition because that's what chemical synthetics do.

@Jerkuleez I do know that chemical synthetics break down from oxidation, UV light, and just all by themselves over time, and I do know that the right natural materials last for centuries. I understand what modern engineering is all about and I know that modern engineers are full of shit much of the time, or at the very least omit their actual priorities. We've been building stick framed houses from solid lumber for close to 200 years and timber framing predates recorded history. The only "problem" to solve in this sphere is labor and material costs.

@deprecated_ii That's a huge part of the equation. Should homes be built at a loss? How many builders are going to sign up for that? Engineered products exist as solutions to marketplace problems. Pretending we can just go back to timber framed homes with masonry chimneys doesn't solve the housing problem. Engineered materials and stick framing does.

@deprecated_ii Everything has a lifespan. Even your very highly esteemed timber framed homes. The point is, engineered products are not garbage because they aren't perfect. It's easy to pontificate on what should be but reality dictates what will be. @deprecated_ii @1967GTO @Jerkuleez maybe it'd go better if we weren't trapped in here with the offgassing of 10 tons of building product goyslopcontrolling where and how much air is entering and exiting the building is good though. there's a lot of sources of exhaust air, from bathroom fans to dryers to vent hoods to gas appliances without their own intake. better to bring in new air somewhere it won't be a problem like a big fuckin draft on the bedroom window that blasts frigid air directly at your cock all winter.

@DemonSixOne @skylar @deprecated_ii Absolutely correct. Lumber quality is shit now. All those manufactured materials are also shitty but they serve a purpose. MDF sucks, hate it, off gases formaldehyde but goddammit it takes a paint finish like nothing else.OSB, I used to hate but I've come around to. I prefer CDX sheathing but budgets constrain.Particleboard has no place in building. I know it's only used for cabinets and closets but that's one section I refuse to budge on. Cabinets are prone to moisture without the ability to breath and dry. Particleboard just absorbs moisture until you have massive mold problems.
