"Saxophone Colossus", the Sonny Rollins biography, seven years in the writing, just came out. I'm reading it now, but I already know this is the best musician bio I've ever read. Learning about what made Sonny great is inspiring. Details of his life, his father and the racism they faced even just after WWII, shows the courage and determination this family had.https://amzn.to/3IAYAJr#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BlackMusic #BLM #Jazz #Saxophone #Books

Sonny Rollins' father was in the Navy for 27 years, a spotless career. He had many white friends and they used to party and play poker in his quarters. He was railroaded into prison because of the racism in the Navy at that time (and long after!). Fraternity between the races was illegal. The adversity that Sonny faced did not make him hate white people, like his father, he enjoys all kinds and always has.#BlackMastodon

The Hayes (movie censorship) Committee did not allow people of different races to hold hands. Many states criminalised interracial marriage with prison sentences and expulsion from the state after prison. Reading this book is a journey into that world and of course the trip through Sonny Rollins' life is amazing.#BlackMastodon

@randulo Just this last part alone makes me really doubt humanity. What's going on in the heads of people who would not allow others to hold hands, because they deem them .... what? Seems to me they are really afraid, but what of? It's just confusing and to me deeply surreal....
