are there modern vinyl players that don't deteriorate the disc? I'm considering buying vinyl so I can listen to music after the bombs drop.

@josh I was lucky enough to receive a vintage player as a gift which sells on eBay for 1k$. The rest of the modern crap I have has been terrible on my vinyl. Good luck

@josh Techmoan on youtube does some decent videos on vinyl old and newI'm more of a cassette guy tho, would be a better choice imo in terms of "we have less access to power and shits fucked" and i just think its a more fun format

all will deteriorate the disk in some way, as its the act of needle friction. the main thing is to set the balance up properly, the arm has a counter weight on most proper turn tables. You will need to set it so its just tipped over to the right side obviously, but not to heavy.

@josh I don't believe so. I think the closest thing to what you might want is a laserdisc.

@josh At this point just get a phonograph, laser *may* not deteriorate the disk but you need to power it and god forbid it broke, replace a lazer diode. If you want it that bad put some MP4s in a Faraday Cage or a CD player. If you want Viynal if you wash it you can get 1000-2000 plays on average per disks life, so just get like 10 of them.

@josh why not just get a nice solar phone charger or a handcrank one, and then a modern mp3 player. Those can fit in your bag and be carried anywhere unlike the vinyl player.

The act of playing a record degrades it because its a physical action of a very hard needle tip (Usually diamond) rubbing against a polymer channel. The degradation with new, cheap turntables is when they're balanced poorly, where they press hard into a record. If you buy a turntable with a counterbalance thats properly balanced you'll minimize the wear over time.I prefer buying vintage (Think 70's and 80's Japanese, not 50's jukebox), but as long as you buy a turntable with the few features it absolutely needs and a new and decent cartridge (think Shure, Ortofon, Grado, etc).If you dont want to think about it and just want product to buy, U-Turn Orbits were a pretty good deal last time I paid attention.

@josh I have a Fluance model. Vinyl deterioration is over the process of literal decades, its not an immediate issue and I would not worry about it like you're thinking.

@josh You need a really good needle (so a few packs if you want to survive the end) and a player that doesnt put a lot of weight on the disc. Those two factors cause damage.Idk if you watch Techmoan on YT, but he's autistic about the arm weight

@josh If you're willing to drop some dosh get a Uturn Orbit with a Ortofon Blue cartridge. It's what I got. You don't have to adjust the arm for weight or anti skid it does that all on its own.

@josh Laser players are a very expensive scam. If you setup your needle right the deterioration will be minimal within your lifetime. If you want to go beyond that, you have to move to digital. With vinyl dust and oxidation is your primary source of crackle anyway

@josh audio-technica.com/en-us/turntables/all/at-lp60xthis or the older discontinued lp60 are the cheapest that exist which have low tracking force and a quality needle
