So many people are joining Mastodon and missing one crucial step: verifying your account! You might think, “I’m not important, why should I care?” Think about it as a way to protect anyone who follows you. Consider:1. Someone sets up an account claiming to be you, automatically grabbing real posts from somewhere else2. They get a bunch of followers3. They post, “really struggling this month, a little could go a long way” with a link to Cash AppHow would any followers know it was a scam?

@AceyAngel @cassidyjames On Mastodon you can only claim to be the owner of a domain like example.com. So your identity is supposed to be your site.

The best way to protect yourself and those who follow you from being the target of that kind of scam—in addition to lots of other, even more nefarious attacks—is to verify your account with a URL of a website! If you don’t have a website, I’ll get to that, but let’s start here.https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/profile/#verificationBasically, add a special link to your Mastodon account on a known site that represents you, then put a link to THAT site in your Mastodon profile. It’ll show as a verified URL!
