       I went to the University of Toronto in the late 1980s, where the campus has a lot of brutalist concrete architecture It seemed like I’d stumbled into an early-80s episode of the Tom Baker Doctor Whoyou always felt that, at any minute, a bunch of daleks would come pouring out of the buildings shrieking exterminate exterminate

       @clive I don’t know if you ever visited Trent Uni in Peterborough but looking at Champlain College you couldn’t help but think that the architect decided he would reimagine Cambridge or Oxford in a Brutalist style. The meal hall gave the eerie impression you were straddling distant timelines.

       @pterrymc I've been to Trent, yes, but so long ago I forgot what it looks likeThat sounds right, though! All these Canadian universities had a) the British traditional historically mixed with b) growth spurts in the 60s, when a lot of Canadian design was trying to embrace the "future" in all ways So you get a strange mongrelization of those two impulses

       @clive I don't remember that, but I do remember being scared to death of daleks, but I also remember how clumsy they were. Slow to aim, rotate and no concept of the element of surprise. Very unworthy of my childish fears, but they earned them anyway.By the way, regarding your pictures, what's Bracknell like these days? Edit: sorry if you're not British you might not understand the question, but Bracknell was the poster child of the postwar concrete jungle.

       @clive @guncelawits I basically lived in Hart House during grad school, not least because I was training for triathlons so ran, swam, or lifted every day. You used to be able to stay in a room at Hart House, tucked up under the roof, and it was as genuinely magical as you might imagine. They gave you a key to the slab of oak that’s the front door!

       @debcha @guncelawits @vanderwal @clive Never noticed this building. I guess I don’t really ride this stretch of 5th.

       @clive "Brutalist"? Or just "boring 70s concrete"? They built New and Fort Book while I was there, but my places were University College (with the gryphon on the newel post - anyone got a pic of that?) and the wonderful tower that we had a passkey to. Then the organ loft at Knox College (I'll leave that to your imagination). And the McLuhan lecture space in the Quad. Hart House too...but more pedestrian to me.

       @clive @debcha @guncelawits Yes! Thinking especially of a dimly remembered children's book with illustrations of buildings like this -- cut-away views showing people happily, purposefully working away inside. Alas, I internalized the lesson that when I grew up, I, too would have an assured place to work happily and well. Adult life turned out to be much more complicated. I'm almost over it.

       @clive @joematango @debcha Tangential: At age ~10 or so, ca. 1980, I wrote a story about a big house full of gender-nonconforming children and books and microscopes and tubas, and I SERIOUSLY lucked out on that front.
