So much exceptional #HeavyMetal music is ruined (for me) by death metal vocals. Seriously, the number of times I've enthusiastically listened to "best metal album of the year" playlists and got sucked in by INSANELY good guitar riffs and explosive drumming, only to have it shattered by another incomprehensible scream/growl...it's too numerous to count. I know, it's a hot take. I recognize that this kind of singing takes talent. I just need something resembling a melody.

@killyourfm totally agree, which is one of the reasons I mostly listen to instrumental metal (when I can find it).

@killyourfm I used to think the same, but now have changed my mind. There's actually songs that I couldn't picture with clean vocals now, and this is also for incredibly melodic stuff (e.g., Septicflesh, Dimmu Borgir or Behemoth, who use orchestral inserts a lot). It all comes down to the vibe the song is meant to convey, and that you simply cannot do with melodic voices. It's why I can't stand American nu-metal, for instance, with those annoying melodic voices on tight riffs

@killyourfm I agree, but there is at least one exception: Allegaeon. I like all of their albums, but the last three with Riley McShane on vocals are my favourites.https://allegaeon.bandcamp.com/music

@killyourfm Oddly enough, as I’ve gotten older, my tastes have become more extreme. Not that I can’t enjoy clean vocals anymore, I’ve just pushed the boundaries of what I find enjoyable. The only trouble with this is I wind up spending *more* on music, now. 😁To each their own. ✌️

@killyourfm I’m the opposite, I absolutely love it when there’s a great melodic riff followed by insane death screams. But then, melodic death metal is my number 1 genre so I’m probably biased. 😂I still appreciate a lot of music that doesn’t contain death metal.

@killyourfm what's your stance on Amon Amarth?I used to be annoyed by Death Metal growling as well, but Amon Amarth eased me in and since then I've found a few bands that I couldn't imagine working without that specific kind of singing.

@killyourfm I used to love metal with screaming/growling vocals, but it was always in a metalcore context where there are the occasional clean vocals, but these days I enjoy melody too much and hardly listen to screaming metal. You can usually hear when a band has a screaming/growling vocalist by just hearing the Intro, music style and style of recording?

@killyourfm ahahaha normal, man.If you want to checkout some recent bands that does not use gutural and I think you will like it, check out Unto Others. For me their their record Strenght, was the best of 2021. They have a 80s Gothic vibe that is great.Another one that is great is Zeal & Ardour. In this case you will hear Scream vocals as well. But you will understand if you take a look at their lyrics. It is a mix between 20s blues with black metal and even electronic music.

@killyourfm I'll give you a practical example, with Anubis by Septicflesh:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQuOkNRfGLkThe refrain at 2:36 uses clean vocals, but those wouldn't work (for me) without the first much heavier intro, or the growls to "counterpoint" it after that. That's a song that, despite the melodic approach (even if arguably more dissonant than melodic, I guess), needs harsh vocals

@killyourfm but I realize my perspective may come from my love for orchestra and orchestration: I need a melodic background and context, while I don't really need a vocal melody, which can sometimes distract from everything that's happening behind. As such, death metal vocals can make the song sound more like a soundtrack than a song, with vocals acting more like a different rhythmic instrument (if it makes any sense?)

@lminiero Yes, it actually makes a lot of sense, and I appreciate your perspective on this. My obstacle is that as a singer, I just can't seem to shake that desire for a vocal melody *that I can sing along with*. It's that last part that I've realized is crucial for me to be able to completely sink into a song and love it.

@lminiero I LOVED the refrain, and totally get why the growly vocals work better with the dissonance of the song. Sadly, it's the only section of the song I enjoyed -- but again, I appreciate the perspective!

@karttu I just listened to "Of Beasts and Bone" and holy crap -- I wasn't expecting the organ, nor was I expecting that explosion of sound after that mellow intro verse with clean vocals. There's so many layers to the vocals across this track (a sort of whisper behind the screaming, multiple octaves, etc) You may very well be right about them being an exception. Following them on Bandcamp and will dig in some more!

@killyourfm I know, they are quite exceptional. On some songs you can hear actual throat singing. As the music and arrangements are so melodic, the "flat" growls fit it so well. You can find pretty much all their albums from YT (Metal Blade's channel has the 3 most recent) if you want to quickly get a taste. I cannot recommend any single track, I tried to pick some but I couldn't, they are ALL FUCKING GREAT!

@killyourfm @karttu Love it. The drums! I’ll be honest it’s not my usual genre but I really liked that track. Where do you guys stand on Ghostmane? That’s probably more to my taste for heavy rock/metal. They seem a bit tame compared to Allegaeon though!

@killyourfm 100% with you on this. I’ve got a friend in a metal band who usually does this sort of vocals. I know he’s good at what he does, but I have such a hard time enjoying it. They did an album that’s more of a dark folk/metal thing with nice clear vocals, and I just love it so much
