Please don’t gatekeep Autism. Self discover is fundamental to the mental health and safety of multitudes. Self identification of Autism prevents suicides and brings our fellow neurokin in from the cold. Please don’t gatekeep, but if you do Gatekeep Autism, please be up front that you are being intolerant and placing your personal opinions of who is and is not Autsitic as a priority over others instead of pretending that you have anything worth saying or listening to … if your goal is to keep your “Autistic club” exclusive, please be clear that is your agenda because the simple fact of the matter is that the majority of Autists are holding the gates wide open because we know there are so many unhatched Autists out there who think they are broken horses instead of the perfect Zebras they are and we are not going to let them suffer a moment longer than we have to. If you want to be Ableist Elitist go do it somewhere else please and leave the rest of us to helping our neurokin find the way home. Thank you.

@autismsupsoc "there are so many unhatched Autists out there who think they are broken horses instead of the perfect Zebras they are . . ." I love this. What a beautiful way to express this thought. #Autism #Neurodivergent

@lmgenealogy @autismsupsoc If it hadn't been for the Internet and being able to selfdx myself in my 50's I would still be one of those "broken horses". How many like I was, born before the internet, are still out there? How many still labouring under a mis-diagnisis? How many who have no other means of learning about this? For so many of us selfdx is the only way.

@Pathfinder @lmgenealogy @autismsupsoc I'm 47. I've had on multiple women who had ND kids ask me if I had been diagnosed. But then when I asked the psychiatrist I saw for ADD if I could be on the spectrum, the dismissed it out of hand. This was four or five years ago, and he's since retired. So, he was old. He also had a significant pediatric practice. I recently asked my GP for a referral to someone to get an official dx, even though I don't think it will really mean much at this point one way or another.

@crysophylax @Pathfinder @lmgenealogy the DSM-5 diagnosis of ASD makes it absolutely clear that Autism can be completely masked and the traits may not be fully manifest until demands exceed capacity. This is really important for people to know ... the diagnoses of ASD explicitly states that no one can deny that a person could be Autistic. Anyone claiming a person *can't* be Autistic based on their casual observations ... or even a full diagnostic, is proving their ignorance about both Autism and legitimate diagnosis of ASD. This is not only how the diagnosis criteria is written but is confirmed by legitimate Autism diagnosticians. They will tell you that when they are doing a diagnosis of ASD, the results are "You meet the diagnosis criteria" or "The criteria was not met" ... They are not to say "You are not Autistic" A DX of ASD is a confirmation process only, it is NOT a negation process.

@Pathfinder @autismsupsoc This is true for me, too. It wasn't until my more-obvious ADHD was subdued by medication that my autistic characteristics became noticeable. I doubt I will ever seek a formal diagnosis, but based on how many things I once thought peculiar to me are, in fact, apparently universal among autists, I'm pretty sure the diagnosis applies.
