@esm so did many videogames in the past where you could crate a "server" which was basically just a hosted room by the developer.It isn't that wrong to assume that a discord guild could be a individually hosted instance by discord tbh.

@esm also kinda ruined various communities before by taking away potential users, plus people seem to have a bad habit of hosting information for projects or whatever on a discord channel, like why do you need a glorified chat room with 18 channels for such things

@icedquinn @esm @fence I mean if you take say "WoW EU server" it's definitely a cluster with different authentications points.But I've seen it being used like this before Warcraft existed because it's probably easier for most to treat a cluster (or loadbalancer + servers) as a single "server" or heck a "supercomputer".See pretty much anything that talks about the DNS root for example, it's not just 13 servers.(And then you could also pedantically wonder if a workstation should be called differently as it's also a bunch of different computers in a trenchcoat)The difference on discord side of things is that even with taking server as a trenchcoat of machines, or an endpoint, it's still entirely incorrect.And it's also incorrect if you would take multiple services hosted on the same server(s), like what you typically have for managed hosting of small service.
