       As someone who works in browsers and perf it’s interesting to see the amount of hate webp webm and avif get from end users.They are technically good formats with great fidelity but they don’t work with user’s programs nor do many websites accept them as upload formats.A significant part of creating a new image format needs to be operating system and app outreach so the image files remain useful outside of a web context

       One change we could make which would help would be to let video formats like mp4 and webm work in image tags so websites can just naively treat them the same as animated gifs would definitely help ease adoption.
