My prediction is that big social, as people learn about things like the Fediverse and decentralized social networking, will eventually use their money to influence legislators to "ban" the services as they can't be moderated as a sole entity and, therefore, they are dangerous.Politicians, liking money and not knowing a fucking thing about tech, could pass laws making the software illegal, based on morality and ethical biases. Will that happen? Hopefully not, but never underestimate the greed.

@mrvapor@social.chaosmagick.com no, it will be politicisns themselves looking for more control over the population, i don't think money would even be involved. But my glimmer of hope is that one they could probably not even understand it or care and secondly i find hard how would they even control what someone hosts on the internet? If fedi dies and becomes unhostable the internet would die as well for real. But I see that somehow unlikely to happen, however it should be protected.

If you think that's implausible, look at TikTok and the effort to get it banned from the U.S. because it's made by the Chinese and they collect the same exact kind of data our our social media platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, et al., collect. Essentially, they are using their money and influence to block off the market for a competitor that would eventually take them down.Don't think there isn't dark money funding this from the tech industry.
