       @Davidtoddmccarty It is a strange phenomenon is it not? I’ve wondered at what point the disposition switched from, “I don’t like that, i won’t listen to it anymore” to “i don’t like that, some outside authority should make it go away”.

       @atyh @Davidtoddmccarty you wouldn't stick around a service if the first 100 posts you saw were hate speech, you absolutely would not "just block" them all, you'd go find another service that isn't mostly hate speech. Services without content moderation turn into swamps of hate speech. The reason why your corner of Mastodon isn't a cesspool and you can mostly get along with the occasional block is because there's content moderation happening that you aren't noticing.

       @atyh @Davidtoddmccarty it's asking "I don't see why people get so worried about umbrellas, I don't get rained on" when someone's holding an umbrella over your head.content moderation is what makes places like mastododon bearable. You really wouldn't enjoy a service that didn't have it.

       @atyh @Davidtoddmccarty anyway, the answer to your question is approximately "after the community gets brigaded by Nazis". It's basically impossible to live "side by side" with virulent Nazis on the same platform and just pretend they're not around. Imagine inviting a new user to your service and saying "yes, you have to block about 10,000 Nazis before the service is usable but after that it's quite nice"? Not a very good pitch.
