My dad saw a YouTube video that distressed him so much he felt the need to show my mom and I. It was about how boys are falling behind in education and increasingly feel useless in a society with shifting statistics with women increasing their presence in male-dominated fields while men disappear even more from female-dominated fields and men playing less of a role in the image of a nuclear family. None of this is new information to me and my mom just kind of rolled her eyes before explaining how the young men in our family (and the neighborhood) are all spectacularly subpar. I, of course, quoted Star Wars:"They will be the architects of their own destruction."

@GalacticTurtle American schools are absolutely shit though. Literally 60% of grade schoolers in American can't read, but ask them about pronouns and they will know all of them, yes xir! :ablobspin: God I just read how in one college a bunch of stupid students protested their Organic Chemistry class, and managed to fire the professor because of it. Found it. Organic Chemistry II and III is suppose to be hard. I even took it twice. I got into a car accident and I knew I would not be able to study, so I dropped it. Took it when I felt better. It weeds out the students. It's a gatekeeping class https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sERlDD9fvE

@GalacticTurtle Oh wow. The entitlement of your peers. Wow. Uh like 60% failed our Organic Chemistry II class. It is suppose to be hard. None of us, not a single student, protested. We blamed ourselves and just took it again. I took my W and studied my heart out until I passed. I thought I never use the stuff I learned in that class but hilariously my first job involved that stuff

@Aflowernamedyou I just remember in one class I had where everyone bombed the final, we all ended up with A's and B's because the class was graded on a curve. Same for calculus. Almost had a stroke freshman year cause I got a 64% on a test (very much a first for me) but then the teacher was like "well the 64% becomes an 87%." *mind blown* That was never the case for my main classes though. I wonder if different colleges within the university do things differently.

@GalacticTurtle @Aflowernamedyou I had my calc 1 curved down. The professor I TAed for this semester apparently sometimes curves the grades down if they do too well, also had that in business school, they just ranked you and gave a certain number each letter grade, really really stupid.I'm sure I've also benefitted from curving up in some classes, maybe that aren't coming to mind. But the last student I tutored got a 43% in calc 2 and it curved up to a C+ LOL. He failed 2 other courses that term though and then quit school when Covid started.

@GalacticTurtle Curves never worked in my classes. We always had that one Chinese or Indian student who never came to class and yet managed to get everything right. ðŸ˜

@Aflowernamedyou At first the whole concept of a curve kinda pissed me off but... alas, it seems real life work is also graded on a curve. Has lots of forced group projects too. XD

@GalacticTurtle @Aflowernamedyou Honestly the more I teach the more I think most curving is stupid. Seems most necessary when the professor just crafts really poor assessments or just is retarded.

@Piss_Ant @Aflowernamedyou The explanation I was given is that they make the test stupid hard then if a genius shows up then they know about it. Naturally, I was a music major so we never had grades on curves. Sometimes you'd have a jury judge your performance. The only time a test was designed to exceed your knowledge base was placement exams when you first got there for stuff like music theory.

@GalacticTurtle @Piss_Ant I majored in Chemistry, and in the first day in class ORG II the professor basically yelled us. He said most of us would be taking this class again. Some were already in his class again. There would be no curves. There would be no haggling of grades. If you got 79 and wanted a B he would not debate with you. If you never come to class or his office hours, and ask for help in class, he would ignore you. He said there are plenty of Youtube videos and other sources that will help you. You have to do this. You have to pass. I will only help people who want to help themselves.Very intimidating guy. He was also very brilliant. Everyone knew it. He was also from India, so his accent was thick. I felt too nervous talking to him because I knew most of my questions were very very dumb to him. He even ignored me first day of class. I waited to talk to him after class and he just ignored and passed me.I used Youtube like he suggested and passed. I then took another much more patient teacher for my final chemistry class. I loved him. He knew I shuttered and rambled when I was nervous, but he always, and I mean always, patiently waited for me explain my nonsense before he corrected me and helped. When I shut down in nervous fit, he even took the time to wait until I opened up again, but not in pushy way that made me clamp up completely. I think that is sign of good teacher. Knowing how read different students, and changing yourself to help them allEven though I was saying the wrong things, he new what I was trying to say. He knew how to correct me without making me feel like idiot or want to cry. He was very good professor. He made the hardest class make sense to someone like me.

@Piss_Ant @Aflowernamedyou I only ever took high school chemistry where my teacher, on top of always saying she was going to die any day now (that was over ten years ago, she's still alive and teaching lol), was that the most important thing to remember about chemistry is that when we go off to college we should never - under any circumstances - throw a keg into a fire.

@GalacticTurtle @Piss_Ant @Aflowernamedyou I took O Chem in college, survived it. The only thing I remember about the whole class is the expression "flat as a flitter", which the prof used to describe 2 dimensional molecules. To this day I have no idea what a flitter is.

@frogsdottir @GalacticTurtle @Piss_Ant @Aflowernamedyou I really liked organic chemistry, to the extent of considering it for my research projects. In the end, biochemistry won out so that's where I got my PhD. Organic however has the tendency to be seen as very hard which for a large part if because there is quite a lot of it and an even larger part that many of the teachers are rubbish and students know that it's hard. And just like always, that means that no one makes a real effort.

@Raunchel @frogsdottir @GalacticTurtle @Aflowernamedyou I made a real effort and I survived and I'm never doing chemistry again lol 😅 no point focusing on what I'm bad at when I'm good at other useful things like math
