While during the 17th and 18th century the notion of the (eternal) soul lost its primacy making room for the (embodied) mind, we now see a similar transformation taking place, devaluing the idea of matter in favor of information.

@tanepiper My second point is really about physics, too.Quantum information theories are about to challenge the standard model. See eg https://arxiv.org/pdf/1709.03824.pdf

@FroehlichMarcel oh absolutely the standard model has been on a lifeline for a while now, longer than should have been allowed. The Muon and sterile neutrino experiments were already pushing the boundaries of strong forces. Scientists who cling to the #standardModel of #physics are like navigators clinging to maps with "here he dragons"

@tanepiper I believe I t is not so much about poking holes into the existing framework than about whether and how it is possible to come up with an equally powerful explanation that requires less idiosyncratic stuff and assumptions. Ideally providing explanations for new contradictory findings, too.Looks like quantum information will eventually provide an overarching key - Certainly coming with its own riddles, as described by Wheeler already in the 1980s.

@FroehlichMarcel oh indeed. I don't think overnight suddenly quarks and photons are going to disappear - we'll just better understanding of their fundamental nature. But we still won't have all the answers in this generation 😸

@tanepiper I don’t think there is an ‘all the answers’ moment ever. 😸Transitions of core beliefs and concepts are just fascinating to follow. The worlds we construct are much less stable than it appears.

@tanepiper @FroehlichMarcel Just notice that the last sentence lacks some context:I didn’t think of physics when I wrote that, but more general how as cultures we construct our world and relating artifacts. There is a constant drift and more often than we tend to notice real shifts, invalidating previous knowledge and related objects. Example: how we create and consume popular music.

@FroehlichMarcel There is probably confusion, today, because "signs/signals" seem to migrate freely from one support to another. But it's not "information", i.e. alteration of physical "conscious" receptors "knowing" what is "the same" through oriented action. If a theory of mind is required in addition to just information theory (signal) Cf. G. Bateson, to be consistent with your aporie... Would it mean... a theory of life ?

@O_Chamboredon Yes, it is paradox, as information needs context: Whose information (agent) about what (carrier/support).Wheeler’s answer in 1989 has a Buddhist touch of mutual arising:“Physics gives rise to observer-participancy; observer-participancy gives rise to information; and information gives rise to physics.”No boundary between a theory of physics and a theory of mind.https://philarchive.org/archive/WHEIPQ

@FroehlichMarcel yes was chatting about this, this morning. The pattern tends to follow - some people discover and idea. One writes it down and fades into obscurity, another slightly misunderstands it but builds a career off it - it's in their interest to stop paradigm shift for 30-40 years. Then people realise something doesn't seem right, go digging and find someone already had a better answer. And society moves on just every so slightly.100 years later the paradigm shift happens.

@FroehlichMarcel A notable co-occurrence to the switch from soul to mind is the birth of reductive science based on the principle of mechanism.Galileo's set of basic machines from his Le Meccaniche (1600) as depicted in Ephraim Chamber’s Cyclopedia (1728):
