The early models pre-70 series, if I remember correctly, didn't have a firing pin safety. So you could hit a bump too hard and with out a hammer it could go off.

That's where the breaking in process comes in. You have to break it in and they're pretty picky about what kind of ammo they like. It's generally a good idea to put a few thousand rounds of military ball ammo through them to break them in.The other pistols mentioned do not require that and are generally regarded as more reliable.There's a reason why the military doesn't use them anymore and opted instead for the M9 and now the Sig.

Out of the box, it's generally expected that a custom 1911 needs to be fired and possibly even tuned to get it to the level of reliability to be your EDC. The triggers are nice and it feels nice in your hand, but it's a safe queen. Not meant to be a true EDC pistol. Sure looks nice at the range and in the safe, though. Grandpa would tell you about winning both world wars with it.

Probably depends on the war. In OIF they never wanted to stick around very long against combat arms units. Usually a solid minute of exchanging fire and then they break contact. I imagine the Vietnam guys had more shooting.

I mean a 22 will stop a bear if you shoot it enough.Shot placement is more important than the round IMO.When it comes to caliber between 9mm, 40 and 45 I don't really care I just like to argue with people about it for lols.Some want to push the 9mm tech has progressed so much. But the same can be said for 45.If tech is a big deal the the 40 is the newest of the 3 and designed for the higher chamber pressures than other 2 in it's original form.45 will compete with 9 or 40 if you compare apples to apples. Like a 180gr 40 to a 185gr 45 and vice versaTL; Dr caliber matters far less than how well you shoot it.
