Goat damn you Wordle for normalising "SHARE" buttons on puzzle apps.

I ought to explain why I dislike this so much.I remember years ago some game, can't remember which one, encouraged players to tweet their progress when they reached certain points in the game. The tweets it generated were awful twee things and for a while twitter was awash with the damn things. It was purely done so as to encourage people to promote the game in their own twit streams, basically polluting social media for the sake of some back door advertising.

Thankfully that eventually faded away. Then years later along comes bloody Wordle and does the same bloody thing. Those stupid grid blobs started popping up everywhere. People swore it wasn't being done to pollute social media with backdoor advertising, it was so that friends could share progress. Except that that kind of sharing can and should be done via friends lists within the app. No need to scattergun it out to social media in public unless you are after all backdoor advertising.

Now Wordle having done it and not received sufficient pushback against it, more puzzle apps are doing the same thing and putting a "SHARE" button onto their results page. People press it thinking they are keeping up with their mates who are playing the same game, whereas in fact they are advert-spamming it to the rest of us who don't give a toss about it.I wouldn't dream of making a game of mine declaim your hiscore to the world in general in the hope of a few extra sales, it's rude.

Seeing it on here vexes me too, rather, as one of the things I like about here is that blatant promotion of stuff is somewhat frowned-upon, making the place more relaxing and less strident than other spaces. Yet I'm seeing this puzzle-app-spam start to creep relentlessly in.Can we at least shove it behind a CW or something please?

@llamasoft_ox At least the mute button is fairly reliable here. When you mute someone or something, they typically stay muted. It seems like muted accounts/words always managed to bleed through on Twitter.

@paradroyd @llamasoft_ox Twitter basically ignores muting for anything but your main stream, and even then it slips through. People you've muted show up in tag searches too. Mastodon is much saner.
