@WhiteDissidentRadio Reminds me of that autobiography of the New Zealand mountain climber who had to cut his friend loose, or be pulled down with him. The chap who fell was called Joe Simpson, his account was like this, he just refused to die even after falling over 1Km onto rock and snow. He could hear his friends looking for him, so with shattered legs and ribs he crawled kilometres through wet snow to find them. His greatest enemy wasn't the cold or pain, it was the demons in his own head, perhaps well intentioned in a different circumstance, making him lie still, rest, give up. Joe made it, he lost the ability to speak, the use of one arm, his mates risked their own lives by searching for him before hiking out to find help. At the end they pitched their tent within eyeline of Joe and didn't see him since it was dark, Joe crawled up to them and was rescued. There is a book by the guy who cut his cord called "Touching The Void", but look on youtube for interviews of Joe Simpson, I'm on a phone with crappy internet but there is a Discovery Channel documentary segment from the late 90s that is just inspiring.

@WhiteDissidentRadio That book and the whole story surrounding it really hit hard when I was twelve. The fury I felt at the author for cutting his friend loose, then realising Joe made it and was there all along, when poor joe was close enough to their tent to be heard, they were so broken they thought they were going mad and hearing his voice.

@Rotten_Ronnie Amazing book. My ex father in law sent that to me and I read it while on FTX. I read that and Catch-22 in 4 days.

@WhiteDissidentRadio I want every Irish 11-13 year old to read this book, digest the implications of those men's actions. To have the seed of miserable-pragmatism and the indominable flame of a focused heart to sit in their mind, for it all to be tied up in a bow with Love, like this story. Poor Joe was ready to die, but kept going only because his friends broke rules to search for him. For context, when I was 12, my years study in English was reading To Kill A Mockingbird.

@Rotten_Ronnie I think my generation was the last to read "real books" in school. We read Robinson Caruso, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Red Badge of Courage and A Seperate Peace. In high school, we read 1984, Catcher In The Rye, Animal Farm, My Antonia, Grapes of Wrath and lots of others.I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to exercise my literary curiosities while I was in school.

Mine read Ender's Game, Lord of the Flies, TKAM, Animal Farm, Anthem, The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451, and I was fortunate enough to be one of about a dozen to read The Sun Also Rises for school tooAll somewhat widely regarded as "classics" but certainly not classics imo

@d0c40r0 @Rotten_Ronnie Just good literature, if you ask me. It doesn't have to be Shakespearean to be profound. One of my favorite books that I've read outside of school has to be The Stranger by Camus or perhaps The Metamorphosis by Kafka.

They go to Spain for fishing, bullfighting, and festivals and they make fun of kikes (but are somewhat soft on niggers) ... fun enough book to pass the time

I had a massive list of books I wanted to get but ended up not buying / pirating ... my favorites were Ender's Shadow and Reaper ManEnder's Shadow I like because it's Ender's Game but a bit more interesting imo and Reaper Man is a funny book with a few thought-provoking bits that gets better every time you read it

@WhiteDissidentRadio They made reading a chore. Instead of reading a book and producing an essay on your experience of reading the book, they made a textbook filled with 200 micro questions asking you about specific chapters, cold literature analysis beside "how did this make you feel" questions. *That* for years, before facing a 2 hour exam, where you have to shit out 4 essays for 75% of your grade, with the remainder in condescending questions about some article (asking stressed out Irish teenagers "how they really feel" about something when 6% of their future employment is on the line.
