Wow. Google is listning, always :amaze: I wanted to show my gf a video about Snowden, a particular one and we talked about it for a bit. So I opened YouTube and guess what the freaking first video was?! I did not lookup this in the past days nor anything related.. :thinktink: Really guys, Google is scary.

@stux At this point I feel like they’re watching too. Gotta say, it’s beyond creepy to be near a product (a specific brand of coffee creamer for example), then get ads for it when you never once spoke of it, never typed it out, never put it on a grocery list or bought it yourself, etc… like wtf 😩

@stux I used to frequent a site dedicated to snarking on a minor media fame-stalking individual from back a decade or so ago (defunct now). After one visit I went to view my Facebook page (mostly defunct now) and there, under People You May Know, was a minor character in the aforementioned minor drama who had only then-recently appeared on that site. Might’ve been slightly less creepy if the person and I shared even one mutual but only slightly.

@stux I have tried to put myself at a distance from Google & Facebook specifically. Still use Gmail, but want to move to ProtonMail at some point. I use DuckDuckGo for search now. It easily handles the 99% of my searches. I Google only in a pinch. I use Apple Mail and Maps instead of using Google apps. I use the app Friendly to interact with Facebook, Instagram and Twitter instead of their individual apps. I use Firefox for browsers. It's been at least a year and the uncanny coincidences stopped

@stux : I don't think Google "listens" to people all the time. It is computationally expensive. 🤔A better explanation is that Google is very good at predicting patterns. 🤖It probably knows that you are interested in Snowden. 🤖Since others, who are also interested in the Snowden, watched this video: the algorithm recommended the video to you. Just as a blind guess. 🌠You found it highly relevant. Algorithm: +1 point. 😅👍🏽

@stux Some of that is always going to be Baader-Meinhof phenomena. How many other times might you have seen a Snowden video pop up on your page and not even noticed it? https://www.damninteresting.com/the-baader-meinhof-phenomenon/Also, consider all of the interactions you had and your girlfriend may have had with the internet BEFORE your conversation. It's incredibly likely that the reason you were talking about him at all is because you saw an article about him, or he was trending on your social media for something. That sort of thing IS tracked by Google.Also, they do correlate people's accounts based on proximity to one another. They know if you're near another person, it's likely that you are going to be talking about stuff together, so the info from one person's recommendation profile can also feed into that of others.It's still incredibly sinister how much they know about us, but filling microphones with epoxy isn't going to stop that flow of data.

@stux I won’t have AI devices in the house and have Duck Duck Go as my search engines on my own and work phones/tablets, etc. Got rid of the dreadful hotmail too, riddled with spambots.Never, ever accept cookies, always reject all and clear my data cache daily, but still way too much snooping.Haven’t been on FB for a year, which was terrible for targeted ads and now Insta is just as bad.So difficult to achieve any sort of decent level of privacy online now.

It’s not always listening, rather the only reason you were talking about Snowden is that the ads and content it had was serving you to generate engagement were subtly steering you towards discussions of Snowden, it just served you the ads/videos that you were more likely to click on…I think it listening is the less scary option here….
