@Godcast @nugger This may not be true in Australia, but sweet potatoes are a lot less pest prone than potatoes (no blight or potato beetle. believe me the latter are hard to kill) here in the US, and produce more calories in the same area.Lower in protein than potatoes, but legumes, barley, wheat are all up there for calories/area, and beat potatoes on protein.Don't get me wrong, I love growing potatoes, but if you're in starvation mode presumably you're not going to have fantastic access to pest controls. poa.st/@undefined/posts/AOI1xkz9ooDbCrt2XY

@nugger @Godcast Yeah, they're awesome that way - I literally used the vines and a red okra w/ some calendulas & bergamot to decorate my front beds last year. Also worth mentioning to anyone who decides to produce their own slips - the water method is nonsense. Put your root in soil and you'll get way more. Plus it lets you take control of what portion of the slip will be prone to producing roots (s. potatoes) just by doing it in a deeper pot.

@caekislove @nugger I've got a small yard and get more potatoes than I can eat. You have to be smart about it, but it's doable. Plus, I think this video is mostly to demonstrate how to make it easier to get by, not necessarily replace having to buy groceries.

@collatz @nugger I'm fond of the Kennebec potato for my part of the country. They're very hearty and disease/bug resistant. I've got plenty of diatomaceous earth for pest control as well. It's all about prepping before shtf.

For Potatos in particular, there are people getting like 100 pounds of spuds from just a barrel. It might not be the solution to never needing to shop again, but that's a lot of security.

@confederatehobo @Godcast @caekislove @nugger It’s a good skill to learn now, as food prices are going to continue to increase. A bag of potatoes doesn’t cost much now, but that could change in the coming decades.

@confederatehobo @caekislove @nugger It works. The method where you continue to fill up the container as the potatoes grow higher doesn't work, though. The tubers only grow at a certain depth, so if you want more potatoes, you have to expand horizontally.

@Godcast @nugger Haven't grown Kennebecs unless it was one of the (too many lol) store bought varieties I did before getting into seed potatoes. Yeah I get those 40lb bags of DE they use for barn stalls.Aphids, mexican bean beetle larvae, tbh I've only had modest results w/ either using DE. Then again, I've always had reservations about putting it into a pump sprayer since its main method of action is tearing things up, so maybe I haven't gotten the quality of coverage I could've.You've found it can stop/slow potato beetle larvae? Would be great b/c it's so much easier to store a bunch than other non-chemical things like spinosad.I'm just doing German Butterball again this year b/c of the literal-seed-to-"seed-potato" experiment from 2022.

@Godcast @confederatehobo @caekislove @nugger If you're not getting any benefit from mounding them, it might be a determinate variety, which I am pretty sure kennebec comes under.Only the indeterminate ones really benefit from mounding.
