@irtapil @markwitton @matthewcobb different body shape, different head shape, short an stubby legs. It’s a totally different animal.

@miekeroth @markwitton @matthewcobb it's a bald mastodon?i kinda have this vague concept of an elephant that includes both African and Asian and that seems to fit in the range of the vague concept?but the concept is maybe on the brink of "not a primate, bat, rodent, or marsupial"

@irtapil @markwitton @matthewcobb this rendition is a result of a discussion about a previous rendition (a quick one) between Mark, Matthew and myself. There is no evidence of fur with mastodon. Mark gave me that and an excellent reference regarding the skeleton and body shape. If you compare it to an extant elephants it’s way more bulky for example. It might look similar, but it is almost the difference between a greyhound and a bulldog.

@miekeroth @markwitton @matthewcobb is it only mammoths we have skin from?what led to the conclusion of fluffy mastodons then? (or maybe popular misconception?)maybe I'm thinking of baby elephants, our maybe just "definitely not a possum" the cheeks do look different

@irtapil @miekeroth @matthewcobb There's an article at my blog that goes into the history of mastodon hair (or its anti-history, as it turns out: virtually all mastodon hair samples are bogus): http://markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2020/08/the-palaeontological-folklore-of.html

@markwitton @miekeroth @matthewcobb well that gets confusing, when combined with the very real mammothsand the yeti might be real but is probably a bear…I'm sticking with the mammoth emoji 🦣 for mastodon, at least until the ther(theGreeksWereWrong)pod 🦖 has feathers
