If this EU decision stands and spreads to other jurisdictions, @pluralistic might get his with to see an end to surveillance advertising and a return to contextual ads as a viable online revenue source.

What's shocking about this is the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) appears to be working with Meta to protect their illegal, unconsenting use of people's data. Eg refusing to release the regulators' full legal decision text to the plaintiff, let alone the public. Heads need to roll at the DPC and potentially in the institutions where those heads are chosen (the Irish Parliament? Anyone know? @pluralistic?)

@strypey @pluralistic maybe @drdeanknight will be able to access the legal decision text of the case involving the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) and Meta and tell us?

@strypey @pluralistic Not that shocking, really, Ireland has basically revolutionized their economy to become the EU “haven” foothold for multinational corporations.

@strypey @pluralistic I'm not entirely sure what you find shocking about it. The core of the Irish economy is to allow American corporation abuse half a billion EU citizens. The data protection angle is just a small slice of that, the ridiculously lax tax regime is another. Selling out Europeans IS the Irish model, and it was for decades. With complete consensus across the whole political spectrum, from the extreme left to the extreme right.

@strypey @pluralistic hardly shocking, Ireland is a hilariously corrupt cesspool specifically marketing that they are hilariously corrupt to giant companies like Meta, Apple, Google and so on and the giant companies set up their EU shops in Ireland specifically because it is hilariously corrupt and also a tax haven. God only knows what kind of backroom deals the EU had to make to Ireland to drag them kicking and screaming to this conviction but I guarantee they are hilariously corrupt.

@oblomov> Ireland has... become the EU “haven” foothold for multinational corporations. That too is shocking and needs to be opposed by a firm local resistance effort with international support. @pluralistic
