@stux Roundabouts require a level of passive/aggressive driving that Americans are not capable of. Americans do "I'm sitting on the sofa eating cheetos watching Netflix" OR are "murdering millions with space nukes." No in-between. Traffic lights in the US are safer for humanity.

@stux as a cyclist, roundabouts are about the most terrifying - luckily there are bike lanes on the two I regularly pass. I don’t think I’d trust the drivers to see me otherwise.

@stux I was on holiday driving around California when at about midnight i encountered a roundabout on the edge of a small town out of the darkness. We sat at looked at it for a minute, no other cars around. Drove around it as a UK/Euro would. Came back the following day during daylight, cars going every which way, clockwise, counter clockwise. Going all the way around to turn right, or just turningIt remains the only time i have encountered a roundabout in the US or CA in 15k miles driven.

@stux We e have some double roundabouts that no one can use correctly. The right one turns right or goes forward. The inner, left one goes forward or continues around the roundabout to another exit. When there is no traffic the roundabouts are great.

@stux The problem I see most often with 2 lane roundabouts is that you get stuck in the inner lane and then need to make a right turn to exit, which involves cutting off the driver in the outer lane or waiting to be let in. The problem with single lane roundabouts is that in busy times, the wait to enter the roundabout ( because of the give-way rule) causes a stand-still which doesn't have the built-in release that a traffic light gives.#mytwocents

@stux Roundabouts in my town are a mess because people don't know how to drive in them. Yesterday almost got hit by a car because the driver didn't stop, when I was already doing the roundabout. But that happens constantly. Some people just enter the roundabout full speed and don't even look if there's vehicles with priority.

@stux one of the big problems with traffic lights is where there’s too much inconsistency of traffic over the interconnecting roads. If the road that takes priority over your road is busy but the one that takes priority of that is quiet, it doesn’t matter how busy your road is, you can be stuck without the right to enter the roundabout.

@stux it depends on the situation. On quieter roads the answer is definitely roundabouts, because it keeps the traffic flowing. On busy intersections, traffic lights are probably safer. There is an issue with roundabouts and cyclists though; I'm aware of one roundabout not far from me (Drenewydd, Powys, the McDonald's junction) which was changed to traffic lights, and I'm told it was because the roundabout was too dangerous for cyclists. It was better for cars as a roundabout.

@stux A roundabout was recently (a yr or 2 ago)installed in Portland ME, not far from where I live and on a route I travel often. IT’S SO MUCH BETTER. Safer for all (cars, bikes, peds); faster throughput; more attractive. What was previously 5 streets coming together in chaos with large expanses of asphalt and confusing traffic signals is now almost serene and park like.To me the key is it’s small size. This helps everyone slow down and know where to go.

@stux i think roundabouts are safer for vehicles but unless pedestrian and cyclists are really carefully considered it can be more dangerous for them. I live in a small town with a lot of cyclists and runners and lots of ppl driving huge trucks and I've seen quite a few crashes or near crashes as the trucks don't care about the ppl on foot or bikes.

@stux Single lane roundabouts seem ok but multilane roundabouts seem horrible to me from experience. I'm not used to roundabouts in my area (being in Toronto) but got caught up in the inner lane of a roundabout when on a trip. Took me like 5 times fully around and around till I could get back to the outer lane. Was almost in an accident. I prefer traffic lights in general.

@stux 8000-lb vehicles cannot easily turn at 75 mph. Nor can drivers manage the contents of a 50-piece McNuggets and a 64-oz soda or latte under high centrifugal loads.Roundabouts will severly curtail pedestrian mortality, unduly burden our pension and healthcare systems, and flood our high schools and colleges with high enrollments, while bankrupting the makers of miniature caskets and cremation urns.

@stux As a pedestrian, traffic lights, please! Roundabouts are designed to keep traffic moving without stopping, which is only great if you're part of the flow of traffic. For pedestrians, they just take up extra space & mean that drivers are less likely to be watching for you trying to cross in front of them.

@stux Not to exaggerate... but I truly think a huge amount of America's problem policing is actually partly to do with the lack of roundabouts! The constant need for cross sections with either lights or stop signs, even when at very small sites with little traffic, creates a constant climate of low level rule breaking where people roll through because it doesn't seem to matter. That in turn creates endless opportunities for pretextual traffic stops, often for biased reasons!

@stux For most countries, I am fully in favor of roundabouts, but I am American, and I know that by and large, they will not work here. I know this was touched on lightly in the video, but Americans are idiots. In Europe, you can easily live a car-free lifestyle, but in America, you do not have that choice. Here everyone needs a car, so the average skill/confidence level on the road is nonexistent compared to Europe. This is a problem that needs a holistic infrastructural and cultural solution.
