BREAKING: #Meta prohibited from use of personal data for advertisingMax Schrems: "Instead of having a 'yes/no' option for personalized ads, they just moved the consent clause in the terms and conditions. This is not just unfair but clearly illegal. We are not aware of any other company that has tried to ignore the GDPR in such an arrogant way."https://noyb.eu/en/breaking-meta-prohibited-use-personal-data-advertisingGotta love this :blobcatamused: :blobcatgiggle: Finally!

@stux My impression as a tech professional has always been that these companies have been overvalued. Their value has been high because they have been able to do pretty much anything they wanted with user data. Their value is mostly hot air without all that spying. Surveillance capitalism won’t work without the surveillance.

@stux Imagine what we could do here, if even 10 percent of that fine could be invested in the Fediverse.

@stux Astonishing that the Irish DPC is acting in a manner suggesting its priorities are pro-business to the detriment of the consumer. Why isn't that the other way round?#meta #GDPR #privacy #corruption

@stux €390 million is good but how big of a hit is that compared to Facebook's revenue?"Facebook generated $117.9 billion revenue in 2021. Approximately $60 billion came from the Facebook app. In 2021, Facebook had an net profit of $39.3 billion" - https://www.businessofapps.com/data/facebook-statistics/It's definitely something. Not being able to use that data for ads will probably be the bigger hit long term. I wonder how much that will cut into their revenue

@stux This has nothing to do with Facebook. It is a stupid European law which now make everyone have to clock silly popup buttons on every website agreeing to privacy stuff. No-one reads that popup anyway. It is very annoying that law. As a German TV show once called it "the data protection law, which does everything, but protect data".

@stux "not aware of any other company" Many if not most companies have the option to share all your data with "partners" and "trusted third parties"...

@stux ... this actually hurts the small businesses that rely on social ads a lot more than any of the big players, who can buy-in to become a "trusted partner"
