Big news - PRX supporting the new podcast namespace and podcast:value (but not sats, disappointingly). https://podnews.net/update/prx-micropayments

@jamescridland Great that they followed through. Hate that it’s a different payment system but still good to see motion here. I’ll need to make sure the index is properly handling that payment type.

@dave @jamescridland I hope they will be including their new value tag in RSS feeds directly, rather than the Podcast Index “wallet shim”…I guess they will if they’re using Castopod for hosting? @benjaminbellamy

@dave @jamescridland @benjaminbellamy I’m also curious about how the implementation details work for web apps and mobile apps…it looks like “web monetization” is a web standard so I’m not sure if their podcast:value info will work in mobile apps. I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t work though. The “no boostagrams, can’t change the streaming value” seems odd to me. I wonder if that’s a limitation of the spec they’re adding to podcast:value, or just a missing feature in their app or Uphold?

@benjaminbellamy @jamescridland @dave actually sorry, re-reading, seems like all my questions are addressed in it. Castopod hosts the RSS feed so a “wallet shim” won’t be needed. Standard is web only and needs to evolve to support mobile apps, and I think user configurable payment amounts.

@benjaminbellamy @dave @jamescridland Something else that stood out to me…> Unlike other micropayment attempts like Value 4 Value that requires Bitcoin or Brave that uses the Basic Attention Token (BAT)Is that accurate? I didn’t think Value 4 Value was tied to specific currencies, or that value even had to be a currency.

@mitch @benjaminbellamy @dave @jamescridland He got it right two paragraphs before his "unlike other..." sentence, which IMHO, is not accurate. For me, Value 4 Value is, a way of golly, literally exchanging something of value between two or more participants in a value exchange. At this point, I think these writers/bloggers are lazy, biased for/against whatever, or FUD Merchants. V4V is NOT a difficult concept.

@mikeneumann @mitch @dave @jamescridland Is Web Monetization a “value for value” system as the listener cannot choose the value? I would say “no” but that's just my personal understanding of all this.

@adam @mikeneumann @dave @benjaminbellamy @jamescridland what is the reasoning for not allowing listeners to determine the amount they want to send with Web Monetization? A temporary technical limitation?

@mitch @adam @mikeneumann @dave @jamescridland As for the split: it could be technically feasible but it is not implemented so you have use workarounds if you really need it.

@benjaminbellamy @mitch @adam @dave @jamescridland 100% agree. Everyone is familiar with 'price' and tries to blur the line with 'value'. The "keep it simple" comfort zone of price is for accountants, finance types, investors, etc. because they think that it is 'reliable'/able to be forecasted, etc. Value can wobble all over the place and is a long-term proposition. The Price-types can't tolerate that uncertainty.#value4value

@benjaminbellamy @adam @mikeneumann @jamescridland @dave I understand it’s a V1 implementation so more feature support may come later. I just would hope the current limitation is within the implementation of the app and payment processor, not some intentional limitation to the spec.

@mitch @adam @mikeneumann @jamescridland @dave Exactly. So far the main idea behind Web Monetization is simplicity:Whether you are a podcaster or a listener, you create one account and it just works. If you're a listener/reader/… you pay $5/mo and you don't have to worry about anything. They are just putting a foot in the door if you want my opinion.

@dave @adam @jamescridland @mikeneumann @benjaminbellamy ahhh I see…I missed that. Ok so a listener can load a predetermined amount in a fiat payment processor, then later on (end of the month?) the payment processor allocates that amount based on listening time per podcast. That is quite different from Value for Value (but not for the reasons the author stated).

@benjaminbellamy @mitch @mikeneumann @dave @jamescridland @brianoflondon created a bridge to HIVE so that all functionality (open value amount and splits) are honored. This can be handled in the same manner with webmonetization.Shoving it into the value tag as is actually feels rude to me, especially using the value4value branding. By using their infrastructure we loose splits for apps and services. By fixing the amount, you cannot say it is value for value.

@adam @mitch @mikeneumann @dave @jamescridland @brianoflondonI think that talking about value4value is incorrect. But I would not say it is rude.As for shoving WM into that tag, you can blame it on me as I am the first one who did that, but when I did it over 2 years ago I suggested the creation of a specific WM tag and everyone thought that using the “value” tag was a better idea, which I did agree with, and still do.👉️ https://github.com/Podcastindex-org/podcast-namespace/issues/132

@benjaminbellamy @adam @mitch @mikeneumann @jamescridland @brianoflondon My point is they are overselling it as a "web standard". I just think we all need to realize that this "standard" is just a proposal by a company called Coil, who runs the entire infrastructure.

@benjaminbellamy @mikeneumann @mitch @dave @jamescridland idk if what we did should be considered V4V, I don't make any claims to that concept and what it should cover. I do think the podcast:value tag should be able to encompass this use.

@adam @benjaminbellamy @mitch @mikeneumann @dave @jamescridland @brianoflondon not sure how else to approach this that would be less rude. I found prior work by others to put web monetization in the value tag. I discussed it on GitHub. I asked if a proposal would be worth making, and then made a PR for it. What can I do to engage less rudely?

@adam @mitch @mikeneumann @dave @jamescridland @brianoflondon @kookster You were not being rude.Rude was invented here in Paris, we are the masters of rude, the word “rude” comes from Old French “rude” (OLD French, we were rude even BEFORE we were French), so trust me, we can tell when there is rudeness.
