"At the risk of stating the obvious, such blistering acceleration serves no practical purpose on a public road, where it can jeopardize everyone’s safety."A good piece on the quixotic problem of electric-vehicle adoption in the US: The auto industry is seeing its hugest profits from electrifying the sprawlingly huge SUV and truck market -- but those vehicles, once electric, are both much heavier and much faster, making them ever-more dangerous to those around themhttps://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/01/electric-vehicles-suv-battery-climate-safety/672576/

@clive If there was ever a rationale good enough to convince people with smoke-belching pickup trucks and Trumps flags to buy electric vehicles this is it

@mihobu Heh heh yeah"You can pose *even more* of a mortal threat to people around you, as you drive a multiton vehicle half a mile to buy a single carton of milk"

@clive I just want to point out that the converse could be true too: "At the risk of stating the obvious, such slow bicycle speeds serves no practical purpose on a public road, where it can jeopardize everyone’s safety."

@clive All vehicles should be #speed limited, in relation to speed limits. No consumer vehicle should be permitted that is greatly oversized. Our #streets are for conducting human #travel, and should be safe for all. Hard to imagine, but if we can require seat belts we can mandate other safety rules. People who cry for freedom to kill others for their fun and convenience will always be crying. They can use their toys off road, in their own privately owned courses (those exist everywhere now!)

@clive after a time you get used to the acceleration and just drive "as usual". I have 2 EVs, the slowest Tesla and probably one of the slower EV (it almost drives like an ICE car). For the weight, it's different car to car, a Model 3 weighs as much a BMW 3 series. But I get your point ;)

@alan_maignan Yeah, I figured that one would pretty quickly adapt to the speed, and figure out its tolerances! The problem with those big trucks is as much with the massive blind spots in *front* of the vehicle, given how high the frunk is lolThat's not a problem with the teslas, which I gather have superb sight lines

@clive Yes, but there are road rules and maximum speed limits and things like etiquette. It ain't the vehicle that knows that that stuff still applies.

@clive the small penis, big truck culture is dumb, I don't disagree with that, but the idea that that acceleration serves no practical purpose on a public road suggests the writer has never tried to merge into or out of a Twin Cities cloverleaf
