My question: Does Gaetz have the smarts to win or just to lose us the speakership? Bc I’m not sure how you get from 19 to 218 by sheer obstinance? And in the end the real losers are the voters who busted our butts for 2 years to scrape away a small majority in the house for them from the Democrat cheaters, only to have them turn around and lose a major advantage in the first week. So they better figure their 💩 out and not give us another L to deal with.

@MissLane You need 218 votes to become Speaker of the House. Dems for the time being are maxed out at their numbers in the House (213). In order for a Dem to get the speakership, significant amount of GOP would have to defect to the Dem speaker candidate to have that happen. Not saying it's impossible. I even think it's moderately likely, it's just that at that point, you'd have bigger problems to deal with.

@MissLane I'm hardly a political animal, but my understanding is that "the plan" is for McCarthy to realize he has no prayer when vote after vote reveals as much. At that point, he steps away from running, and urges his supporters to cast their votes for Jim Jordan. That's my understanding, anyway.

@C9_stotte @MissLane that would be the end of establishment rinos. They can "work across the isle" indefinitely, but could they explain to their constituency why they elected a democrat to lead them in the house and still have backing?

@C9_stotte unless they eventually go with a pure majority vote and not all the Republicans align with one candidate.

@MissLane Wouldn't that be up to the GOP to again capitulate to the Democrats and change the rules?

@jsmith @MissLane No, it would be the end of the entire Republican Party. We would never win the Presidency for a generation because of the sheer indifference it would breed in a voter base that is already indifferent. And I do not put it past the GOP to kill their own party so they can go to all of the propagandists in the Soviet organ orchestra and say to them "See? I'm not like the other extremist Republicans! I have principles and I even fell on my sword to stand by them! Praise me daddy!"

@C9_stotte @MissLane yeah except the voters are "already indifferent" because the GOP continually capitulates to the left, so there's effectively nothing to lose here since electing another rino speaker is the same as having no Republican party.

@jsmith @MissLane There is such thing as the primary system. If our representatives and Senators keep capitulating to the left, why do they keep getting back in office? We are to blame somewhat. The same people who are indifferent are the same people who are lax in doing their due diligence when they aren't indifferent.

@C9_stotte @MissLane I agree. But courage is contagious and even 10% of the members openly defying the establishment could be just the thing required to start a brushfire.
