@stux Jumbo is Swahili for 'hello' …Also … in some supermarkets I like to swear at self service machines, especially when they are doing all kinds of incompetent dumb machine stuff … like singing jolly seasonal greets.In other supermarkets, parents leave tantrum children littering the floor, for me to step over. Jumbo is a commercial company, so in reality I reckon they found out that it is better to direct the chatterboxes to one counter so they can tell customers at the other counters to get a move on. So in total they can throughput more customers. :blobcatcheer: Also don’t forget that it is Jumbo that introduces a discouragement policy for cash money, which is NOT elderly (or anyone valuing cash money) friendly.

@stux I think 'chatting' is overstating it, but I think it is nice to keep some level of human interaction in 'live shopping'. Exchanging a few friendly words with the cashiers and other personel when I get and pay for my groceries.Depending on the number of items I chose self service or a line with a cashier.

@stux This is brilliant. Before my Mum had a catastrophic stroke, we used to take her to our local Aldi. Everybody there was lovely. She was deaf but didn't use sign language. She was able to lip-read very well. The staff, but one in particular, would go out of their way to have a conversation with her which was so important. Mum always had us with her but so many elderly people are alone. Conversations are so important. A slow checkout is a lovely idea.

@stux i worked retail, mostly grocery, when I was still able to work. I got in so much trouble for literally just being kind to people. Some of those people I was the only one who ever listened to them. It was worth getting in trouble for.

@stux This is a lovely idea. I spent some time with my elderly dad last year, after he had a stroke. It affected his speech, which really knocked his confidence. He became very reluctant to speak, in case he made mistakes.But I noticed, when we went to the supermarket he knew all the cashiers and chatted with them! Perhaps it was less stressful to chat with strangers than with those who knew him pre-stroke?Anyway, those friendly cashiers helped him more than they will ever know.

@stux I haven't seen that yet, but it's interesting. I will go to Jumbo and check. I would like such option. Most supermarkets in NL put self-scan registers, where you can scan your groceries yourself, in your own speed, but obviously you will not have possibility to chat there.

@stux We often see this in the UK at "normal" checkouts, that the cashiers have time for a chat.Customers in a hurry use the self checkout.Once in Scotland we had the cashier's daughter-in-law in front of us and they had to exchange departure news first. And everyone in the queue had time to wait. 😀

@stux what a great idea! Not only for older or lonely people. I’m #disabled because of stuff regarding my back. Because of this I can’t bend down to the shopping cart that far and that fast. But especially at #Aldi here in Germany the cashiers work so freakin fast that I can’t keep up with. This is why I’m often shopping in other more expensive super markets or late in the evening when there are less people in the shop.

@stux If the supermarket I work for was to introduce that I would have to refuse to work that checkout - I'm the fastest till operator in the store for several reasons, partly because I only get put on there to get rid of queues (and have my own department to look after!), but mostly because I just can't do smalltalk, and want to get rid of them as fast as possible.

@stux This would never work here in the US, where supermarkets have like 15 checkout lanes, only two of which are ever open. The rest of the lanes are nothing but theater. The open lanes each have 5-6 people impatiently waiting in line, so lowing this down further would only add to everyone's misery. Just another small example of our barbaric nature.

@stux A great idea. I think the key to creating a more harmonious society is accepting that we don't all have the same needs at the same time. Those who are in a hurry need fast checkouts, those who want to chat can have slow checkouts. I'd also suggest other checkouts with more space and fewer products at eye-height for parents with kids.

@stux such a beautiful idea! Can easily see myself using this lane. I’m very chatty and enjoy the human experience and exchange of energy. Not just the elderly, I think people in general miss real human connection more than we may realize. We’re always lost in our phones, but it’s not the same as feeling and sharing real life, real human energy. So important for mental and emotional health.

@stux what a fantastic idea...Way back when I worked in a public library.. we knew many of the elderly readers changed their books super regularly for the company and chat .. more than the actual reading material!
