There is a command to purge everything older than N days, but as @lamp figured out, it does not include profile pics and banners. This could easily inflate storage costs in few months depending on amount of federation done, and I assume journos would want to keep tabs on as much people as they could.

@mint @Humpleupagus @jeff@federated.fun @p @Fog @jeff@newsie.social i wonder how the other softwares like misskey and pleroma handle it; ideally it should be cached temporarily then proxied on demand (it has to check for updates anyway).Well the BENEFIT of keeping it forever... servers will die; it'll keep the profile pictures on historic threads from rotting.And for a large server it's relatively small compared to your members' attachments. It's only really a problem for single-user instances on small vps's.
