@shaman Brilliant, though I'd be mildly concerned about the limits of “Pesticide Safe” (which obviously is not to be confused with “Pesticide Free”).

@shaman I would just ask to be sure if “pesticide safe” isn’t a safe 🔐inside which you can safely keep your pesticides

@shaman and the circle turns. If I go into the countryside I will still get my food on a banana leaf. Why did we change?

@shaman There was a time in South India, restaurants will wrap take out food in banana leaves and then wrap that in a newspaper with a tie of jute thread. Of course in dining will be on a leaf as well. The used leaves will be consumed by cows which gave us milk & methane. But then it was then.

@tip @shaman because plastic bags can be packaged far more densely for far less money and they never go bad, just to start. Also imma be laughing when people have to pick up dog turds with banana leaves while they're out walking around.

@shaman makes sense:Not only do banana leaves get produced as a side-product, but they also are 100% compostable

@shaman I’m in Thailand right now & I don’t know where this photo was taken & will grant that they do use banana leaf as a replacement for some things we would use plastic for (plates being another example), but I *guarantee* you these pouches containing vegetables are placed into small plastic bags and then placed in larger (probably plastic) bags with other items before being handed to the customer. The level of plastic use here is astonishing and recycling is almost completely non-existent.

@shaman I don’t see why we can’t do the same in the USA using corn husks?!? And then I remember where I am (in the middle of Indiana) and realize, once again, how stupidly stubborn and shortsighted folks here where corn is King. But, a girl can dream.#corn #hempplastic #environmentalist

@shaman Wonder if bamboo leaves and lotus leaves could be used en masse too. I know they used to be used to wrap produce and foods in wet markets in the not so distant past, but not sure if they are suitable for super markets these days. Also wonder what temperate climate plants could be used in lieu.

@shaman Ehm. I hate tae be that human, but plastic can be recycled but once a banana tree is stripped of its green foliage, photosynthesis stops and the tree dies.

@shaman Wondering which county health department approved this. Or what the guidance is. When I was licensed to sell baked goods at my farmers market the guidance for packaging food was fairly specific. Again, I dont know their local guidance.

@shaman I suppose banana leaves have been in use as packaging for many centuries. Very common in many of the Asian countries I've visited.
