Decentralization is 20 servers connected togetger and spread out and not 20 domains pointing to the same thing :blobcatgiggle: :catblush:

@stux mastodon is federated not decentralized by design. Maybe you’re not talking about Amato

@stux @jeff now if only I could convince all the people using Discord that their “server” is … oh, never mind.

@chris @stux I don’t think mastodon being federated means that it isn’t simultaneously decentralized in this case. They even refer to it as such in the mastodon documentation. https://docs.joinmastodon.org

@chris @stux In this case for example Stux’s server/instance would be stored and accessed wherever he’s got it hosted while someone else’s instance could be hosted and moderated from within their own home or another server. Entirely separate but interoperable with each other if I’m understanding what you mean by physical separation.

@chris@abraham.su @stux it’s decentralised and federated - what it’s not (I’m pretty sure) is ‘distributed’

@chris @stux Isn't federated network just one of several models or types of a decentralized architecture? I mean, "decentralized" means "having no central piece", nothing more.Other models can be peer-to-peer, in either full mesh (e.g. Matrix), or partial mesh (e.g. Bittorrent).
