I'm going to play around with #Helix for a while. @taywee showed it to me, and I gotta say, its command concepts make a lot more sense to me than Vim/NeoVim.https://helix-editor.com

@hyde @taywee I guess you could take the time to configure all of Vim's commands to mirror Helix. What interests me is the concept of `selection`->`command`, over Vim's `command`->`selection`.

@hyde @taywee For example, in Vim, deleting a word or removing it to the buffer would be `d` -> `w`; in Helix, this is reversed to `w` -> `d`. The idea of establishing what you want to enact a command on first seems more intuitive to me.

@brandont @taywee I guess the goal is to mimic how we speak ... Delete a word, delete a paragraph, delete a sentence.

@hyde @taywee that makes sense. This varies between languages though, right?

@brandont @hyde @taywee Yeah, I prefer the action first personally; I know what I want to do immediately, but it takes me a moment to work out which operator selects exactly that much text.

@benjaminhollon @hyde @taywee There are other design philosophies that I find more interesting, like how selections and modes behave.

@hyde @benjaminhollon @taywee since I already use it, then yeah probably.I'm only experimenting with Helix because I think it has some interesting design choices that stand out over Vim/NeoVim. I'm probably not going to drop Neovim entirely unless I find Helix better meets my needs. The project doesn't even have plugins yet, I doubt it can completely replace Neovim for me, at least not yet.

@benjaminhollon @brandont @hyde @taywee True! I find that learning new things isn't quite so hard, it's the un-learning of really well-established things that's the kicker.I tried switching to dvorak for a solid month in late 2021 and it just about broke me. 😅

@hyde @benjaminhollon @brandont @taywee What scared the daylights out of me was that it took me a couple hours to get back up to speed with QWERTY. After 30 years of typing, that really, really scared me. I'm 80 regularly, 105 on a good day (with a very good keyboard).

@RL_Dane @brandont @taywee @benjaminhollon @hyde can y’all enlighten me on why one might change to dvorak? beyond “street” (er, um, information superhighway) cred. allegedly more efficient, but that can only be true if you’re practiced in using it. and i’ve never encountered one in the wild (US, Canada, and UK). so i enter a nee workplace and it’s basically guaranteed QWERTY.

@RL_Dane @brandont @hyde @tayweeFor me it wasn't so much unlearning as that helix has missing/different functionality. No '*' or '#' really broke my editing flow.

@RL_Dane @brandont @hyde @tayweeNo worries, we are all still vim noobs. In normal mode '*' searchs forward for the word under the cursor, and '#' searches backwards for the word under the cursor. Is a super quick way to jump around code.
