Heuristics-or "pattern recognition", as you say, are how our brains are inclined to utilize information, and people rationalize their heuristics as if they had carefully considered the data and derived some objectively correct conclusion from it.Of course, I have a very naturalistic worldview, so if people are naturally inclined to racism, I think that's preferably to anti-racism, since that seems to be unnatural. Heuristics aren't perfectly rational, but that's okay, they aren't supposed to be perfectly rational, they're supposed to cognitively efficient and sufficiently accurate. To be rational and objective is far less cognitively efficient and more objective information is not even nessecarily beneficial-and even if it was, the additional time and energy compared to working with heuristics is often not worth the potential benefits of being objectively correct more often.You can form detrimental heuristics, though, so people should try to be aware of what their heuristics are instead of simply acting on them because they are heuristics.
