@shaman Very badass indeed! And also very LOUD. May I respectfully suggest adding a cautionary note to that effect?

@shaman Oh man, I hope the timing device (gear or whatever) never wears or slips otherwise, that pilot is going to be in for a big surprise. But, as you say, that is some serious engineering!

@shaman Disagree. This is flagrant engineering."Badass Engineering" is for products and devices that just work, all the time, and you never even notice. The humble aluminium can, for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUhisi2FBuw&t=5s

@shaman Also a very unique location. Because of rotor-droop, they have huge signs, a siren, and a bullhorn to warn people only to approach from the sides. The rotor tips can clear the ground by less than 5’ in front. The rotors can no more “go out of synch” than the tail rotor can fail on a reg helicopter. Sufficiently rarely to make it worth itWhy? Because 100% power goes to lift. Reg helicopters send +30% to tail.

@shaman I saw one of these transporting felled trees in the Valle Verzasca. I think it‘s originally a Fokker design.

@shaman I like how the pilot looks up at the last second, as if to think “this can’t really be working, can it?“

What's the name of this copter? ... I'd hope there'd be a ton of advantages, because if the timing ever goes off, that pilot is going to have a really bad time.

@djsumdog @shaman i'm sure it's a mechanical linkage. i think any damage to helicopter rotors is almost always catastrophic regardless

@shaman A KMAX! I was driving a forest service road and came across one in a clearcut early one morning. They use them on heli-logging jobs occasionally, though Chinooks and SeaKings are more common.
