Not sure why I waited this long to read The Cathedral and the Bazaar but dang that was an interesting read.

Is deinstitutionalization just the opensource bazaar escaping into other aspects of society? 🤔 I'm thinking of the free market aspect of the bazaar applied to the media, social networks, and legitimacy. The essay is framed in terms of ego-and- reputation-driven peer-reviewed communities leading to more collaborative and higher quality work. Is this not what is happening on substack, social & independent media right now? but with expertise and opinion in general, not just code?

Like, legitimacy and meritocracy is no longer tied to large institutions, but individuals and small communities that know their shit. Out of this forms a free market of decentralized ideas, truths, and reputation that evolves over time, instead of only approved thought that is "fact checked" by centrally planned bureaucracies captured by corporate interests.

@jb55 with code, it's easier ti check if someone got it right than with the news.

@jb55 It always amazed me, while writing code for a living, that people would actually pay me, well, for playing.

@jb55 I just noticed the “esr” attribution for that quote, so I wondered what Eric S. Raymond is up to these days. His home page was last updated in May, but without going to the Wayback Machine, I can’t tell what he changed. Most of the rest of the site is old.http://www.catb.org/~esr/

@wolf480pl @jb55 same with Math and a few other things. The thing is, if you’re an average coder or mathematician you don’t need a trusted third party to tell you a theorem is true or a piece of code works and is elegant. But if you’re just a random person that needs to use software or something mathematical it’s much harder. The actual experts don’t need institutions. But regular people can’t tell an expert from a scammer most of the time.
