@stux this is basic phishing. Whenever you get a notice like this, open your browser, go to the site’s webpage, log into your account … never, never use the embedded link! You’ve just finished the 1st lesson in Internet 1.0. Memorize the answer. You will not like the penalty for getting this wrong.

@stux Admins of Mastodon instances should ensure their legitimate emails and being properly DKIM signed, then publish a DMARC record with a reject policy in DNS to prevent #phishing emails from spoofing their email domain in the from address.I wrote a blog post on how DMARC works a while back. https://seanthegeek.net/459/demystifying-dmarc/#infosec #informationsecurity #cybersecurity #mastodon #adminsofmastodon #phishing #spoofing #dkim #dmarc #email #security

@stux I bin warning folks this shee-at was a-comin' our way...propts to @stux for the Early Warning Radar. And TBH some black woman journalists and intellectuals been hit with this trollery long before most...So my main point: it is also possible for the #trolls to fake that the emais are indeed sent from the instance you are on...AFAIK. But I am not an expert, just, a popularizer. Stux is pointing out though that there is no reason to ever receive a post like this anyway. My question is how do the trolls figure out that a given email address matches a given account? Seems like they might have penetrated the Ocean Cloud or wherever the instances are hosted...?

@stux I already receive some mails like that in the mailbox of the instance. My guess is a bot see a "@" and suppose it's a mail address and send a spam to it.The reminder is very usefull, but while they ignore(don't know) the mail of the user, the risk is low.But it's a sign of growing platform that interest the spammers/scammers.

If not, easy to be hijack acct... #Cyber #knowledge are require for every #Mastodon & it's affiliate users... Otherwise, easy to victimized by exploiters ...

@stux Sigh.Phishers suck big sweaty donkey balls.I seem to spend half of the time warning my less technically-inclined friends/family about them, and the other half accidentally clicking on them myself.ALWAYS hover over a link and look at the domain of the URL before clicking. That usually gives it away.

@stux It would help to setup DKIM, SPF for the mailserver that actually sends the Mastodon mails. That would help to let incoming mailboxes to decide to send them to spam or reject the mail instantly. There are tools that let you check if your domain-recors are setup properly for this to function. Have a look at https://www.dmarcanalyzer.com/dmarc/dmarc-record-check/ and you can select other checks in the Tools menu.

@stux for the #mastodon #users here a reminder to turn on #mfa AND have a very random password (in your #passwordmanager) that is only used on mastodon and nowhere else. For the #infosec community: is there a good free #dkim #dmarc monitor for domains that you can easilly use at scale? All monitors I saw are rediculously expensive.

@stux It's great that these phishing attempts are always so extremely unprofessionally written that it's nearly impossible to fall for it. 😁 General advice: never use a login link/button provided in such a message, be it e-mail or otherwise. Instead, always log in in the way you regularly do - e.g. manually in a web browser. In this particular case, you'd quickly find out that it's all lies.

@stux Thank you for posting this and for providing alt text. Just so you know, the correct alt text would be the full text of the letter. Alternatively, you would put the short description you provided and toot the full text as a reply. That said, I didn't bother to alt text toot the disclaimer at the bottom as it is boilerplate and not relevant to the message. #AltText #a11y

@stux I would have ignored and deleted this, but it took a lot of warnings like yours to build that confidence. Many people won't get those warnings, and many won't see this one. This is a recurring issue across many, many platforms of every possible kind. Is there a way new users can see a warning like this as part of a standard account creation process? Is there some way to kick that request up the chain somehow?
