Well now it really is crickets. My Mastodon instance has been showing me only one or two messages, total, for a day or so. "Load more" is ineffective. The federated stream is fine.Problems at the forge?

@robpike Are you talking about the local timeline? Or your home timeline? Maybe your instance and the people you follow are quiet.

@robpike You are still only following 11 people. This isn't like Twitter and Facebook and other systems which show you posts based on an algorithm. You need to follow people and hashtags or else your home feed will remain empty.

@robpike strange, it all looks happy from here. What you describe sounds like your instance's work queues are stalled and not processing incoming federation traffic. I would @bradfitz but if that's what's happening he won't see the notification...

@soaproot That's not relevant here. I know there are recent messages - ones I saw yesterday - that are not appearing today even when I reload. The server is stalled somehow.

@robpike @soaproot The explore timeline updates every day with some time decay. But your personal timeline should be stable otherwise your Mastodon instance is not running well.

@robpike Hmm, OK, if posts which used to show on your home timeline are not showing now that is indeed a different problem (which is, presumably, local to your server). I'm not sure that work queues being stalled would cause that symptom (actually the fact that you saw my post might be helpful in debugging) but I should stop here because I don't have enough knowledge of how the mastodon software works to have especially good guesses.

@robpike I've had suspicions this happened to me before. It would be nice if there's some sort of failure surfacing so I could know if somethings wrong. Like when you're using a mechanical device and hear a weird noise

@robpike Come over to sauropods.win. Works beautifully.(And by the way, thank you so much for The Unix Programming Environment, which despite its being outdated now remains the most practical book on programming I've ever read.)

@mike Thanks for the invitation. I will seriously consider it. I love the domain name. Sauropods Win!

@robpike I feel like this happens to me regularly.
