Can Mastodon please implement blockquote formatting etc? I really want to write markdown on my Pleroma instance, and not worry about how Mastodon is not going to format quoted parts of posts correctly. And quote-posting. Pleroma just does the usual web page previews, thus resulting in decent equivalent of quote-posts. Hence my confusion about all the drama people made about “nuh Mastodon should not support this”.I’m already annoyed that my Pleroma instance is not doing the right thing with showing Friendica posts, breaking them terribly when my friend is reposting some of the posts.Or that Pleroma doesn’t seem to notify the original poster that I mentioned them by pasting their post’s URL. (It could just put it in recipients field in ActivityPub activity and object…).But I suppose I’m most surprised that blockquote doesn’t just work.(For example, this paragraph is supposed to be visually distinct from the rest of the text in this post. I used the > syntax in Markdown.)

@ivan That’s always the downside of standards vs. products: Products are easily mailable by a single entity (their owner) changing standards, or even just coming to a consensus about how to interpret / implement them, is a real pain in the rear.

@philip Controversial opinion: UX is what matters most, and cooperating on features like these with other (volunteer) developers is important. It's been years since the OStatus -> ActivityPub migration. ActivityPub specs incl ActivityStreams 2.0, Activity Vocabulary 2.0 should have included a spec for these critical user journeys from the get go, and if not, there should have been a roadmap. These are W3C managed and getting these things right is as important as leaving the door open for non-microblogging use cases (images with Pixelfed, software control with ForgeFed, writing with Write.as/Read.as/Pfefferle's Wordpress plugin, video posts with Peertube).I mean, especially considering Write.as/Wordpress. The character limit is artificial and I have it set to 5000 characters. If I write longform, I will also use formatting. The support needs to be excellent and cover at-least the defacto standard for plaintext markup, Markdown.Markdown isn't that powerful. The HTML it might generate seems like a reasonable subset to support in the ActivityStreams objects.Standard should have defined something from the get-go, and gotten expanded. Instead we have a [massive spec of post types and activities](https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-vocabulary/), with very dynamic set of properties attached to the posts. But that's just my misguided opinion, who am I to decide this

@darth Wow, there is no italic and no blockquote in what your server presents. groan(Probably the above wasn’t bold either.)@freemo

@ivan QOTO's markdown supports blockquote and bold. Never tried italic but should support that. And yes I do see your bold rendered.@darth

Even though Friendica is pretty slow (which is understandable as a PHP webapp), it does a good job in showing your formatting.
