One thing that’s interesting about the discussion surrounding speech guidelines on social media is that it never seems to be about letting users control what they see and by whom they are contacted.I’m not saying that’s all it should be. There need to be guidelines against doxxing, for example. But most of the rest should be about what content people want to access, right? If people don’t want to interact with people who use certain language, they can block. If there aren’t enough options for controlling who can contact (or tag) users, that’s the kind of thing that would be good to add.Who really cares what language people use (not tagging or naming you personally) if there are easy options not to have to see it?

@Cousin_Isobel That’s Andrew Doyle’s line, more or less. That apart from illegal speech (e.g. threats), it should be a matter of users themselves moderating the content they themselves see, and not about what everyone is allowed to see.

@Gnomeshatecheese @Cousin_Isobel Agree with Gnome. Free speech means that people can say what they want up to the point where they break the law ie threats, libel, deformation etc. Otherwise it should be for the individual to manage. I'm a big girl and am perfectly capable of muting trolls or engaging in debate with people I disagree with. I could even choose (wait for it) to abstain from social media.Muting or blocking people is covered by free speech. I don't want such people removed or cancelled, but I am free to ignore them. In the case of TRAs, I love them to speak because with every utterance they undermine their own cause. The only time I would like to see some curating is for children. In such cases, it would be better if parents had more support from tech companies to block unsuitable content that is not age appropriate. It highlights the problem when adults are told what they may or my not see to "keep them safe" but children can access porn, hormones and genital surgery in the name of progress.

@KeepTakingTheSoma @Cousin_Isobel The only time I would like to see some curating is for children. … but children can access porn, hormones and genital surgery in the name of progress.I’m a hardliner and would actually go so far as to say children shouldn’t even have smartphones or similar devices in the first place. Give them basic cell phones that can make calls, send texts and maybe do alarms, but absolutely no Internet in available right in their pockets.I agree that there’s also a place for measures like blocking non-age-appropriate content, seeing as children will be on the Internet to some extent.

@Cousin_Isobel @Gnomeshatecheese @KeepTakingTheSoma Kids will still sometimes need to get on a computer in order to find information, though. They only need to because they can, it’s a recent development that kids need internet access to do school work, etc. I doubt the clock can easily be turned back on that one, but it could be done. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn of exclusive private schools that either never introduced it or phase it out.

@Flick @Gnomeshatecheese @KeepTakingTheSoma That’s true. I really hope the trend of elementary school kids with Chromebooks is reversed soon.I think it would be a nice option for some really good safety filters to be put on browsers to exclude a lot of content, so kids can use a computer in a high-traffic area of the home. Zero internet is great, too, but that’s pretty far for most people, so a safer option would be nice.I know the challenge would be finding a company that agreed with us about what “unsafe” content even is. I don’t trust age ratings on content more recent than 2018. There’s trans crap in Blue’s Clues, and that’s for toddlers. The “safe” browser I am thinking of could either be highly customizable or we could trust conservative Christians to produce one. I wouldn’t mind doing that. I would just tell my kid we have the Jesus filter and she doesn’t have to look at the Jesus stuff if she doesn’t want to.

@Cousin_Isobel @Flick @Gnomeshatecheese @KeepTakingTheSoma The kids in the school here were given them, but they are locked as regards being able to use them for nefarious purposes, but some of the little shits are utterly careless of them as they were free and do not value them, others have deliberately broken them just because, all the money that would have cost as well.

@HebrideanHecate @Cousin_Isobel @Flick @KeepTakingTheSoma I honestly don’t think kids should be given laptops to take home. Have a bunch of school laptops to be used at school, under teacher supervision, fine, whatever. But giving them expensive things to do what they wish with, is insane. And yes, I think kids should learn how to do their homework with pen(cil) and paper. It’s not like they’re writing 50 page essays at that age anyway. But a lot of educators seem to believe that doing the exact same assignment on a computer is somehow inherently more educational than doing it on a worksheet or in an exercise book.

@Cousin_Isobel @Gnomeshatecheese It's the natural consequence of telling parents that saying no to children is child abuse, and then parents handing over control to the state because "someone ought to do something."In a sane world, parents would be able to have these conversations with their children, just as they always have done about road safety, not making rash decisions, dealing with bullying etc. And I suspect that this still goes on in sane households. I live in hope.

@HebrideanHecate @Cousin_Isobel @Flick @KeepTakingTheSoma Some responsibility of that behaviour also lies with the school. “Oh well, if you’re so clumsy, you’re not going to touch any of the school laptops for the rest of the year then and btw. that’s 2h detention after school today” would go a long way to deterring such bullshit.Sadly, it requires that the school actually take a unified stance starting from the administration, and that’s apparently very rare.

Merely because I actually do things with software, and don’t just read my email and browse social media. @Gnomeshatecheese @HebrideanHecate @Cousin_Isobel @Flick It's laziness as much as anything. I used to work in teaching, so I know. Giving kids laptops, tablets or chrome books is an easy half hour and ticks the *use of IT* box on lesson plans. IT sessions were often about "research" ie look up some facts about elephants, resulting in removing devices when they spent their time watching youtube vids. Hardly any kids can type in word programmes to a useful level in primary school. Apart from a few fun programmes or websites to play games or do some *coding* there is very little to be gained from primary kids using tech, apart from a carrot for good behaviour and some time for a busy teacher to mark books. I spent a lot of time reminding some children that if they could spend hours building with lego or playing on a phone, then they could be assured that their hands wouldn't drop off if they picked up a pencil and moved it across a page.

@Gnomeshatecheese @KeepTakingTheSoma @LisbonMuse @Cousin_Isobel @everlong @starsstorm @Flick It’s wonderful to hear, he says the same, to find a reader among them now makes him almost weep for joy! Have just asked him if the primary school has the chrome books and he said yes they do, but he doesn’t know if they are available to all the ages or just the older ones.

@meowski @everlong @Cousin_Isobel @Flick @Gnomeshatecheese @starsstorm Every day I thank the lord that I grew up in a pre-internet world. It means that I have hobbies which make my life fulfilling. I do worry about these keyboard warrior activists and their vicarious, virtual existence. They appear to be more interested in fighting invisible monsters than finding fun things to do.

@Gnomeshatecheese @Cousin_Isobel @starsstorm @Flick @KeepTakingTheSoma I bought a washer/dryer this year, and the price was not the only reason I eschewed the programmable types you can operate from a smartphone. I mean, I don't have a smartphone, but if I did, I wouldn't want to pay for a feature that might become obsolete when mobile operating systems advanced. Or with software that required an update that an old phone wouldn't support. I've been down that road before. Features becoming obsolete only because software updates "no longer support" your the older model.Also--can you imagine someone hacking into your dryer? (I'll get her....I'll change her heating option to cotton and shrink her shirts. Bwahahaha!)

@meowski @KeepTakingTheSoma @Cousin_Isobel @Flick @Gnomeshatecheese @everlong My daughter’s school sent a reminder at the beginning of December that kindergartners aren’t allowed cell phones in class. That’s when I found out one of my daughter’s classmates has been bringing one to school and showing the other kids.

@KeepTakingTheSoma @Cousin_Isobel @everlong @starsstorm @Flick @Gnomeshatecheese I agree. I ran a program at the school and only allowed Chromebooks at the end for free time. A lot of times they would go for them over other things, but a good amount of time they'd rather just go outside or play with Legos. Those were the little kids though, they weren't too attached to the computers yet. The sixth graders were a lot worse about it, but also not as bad as I was expecting either. Like they still read books and stuff too.

@starsstorm @Cousin_Isobel @Flick @Gnomeshatecheese @KeepTakingTheSoma @everlong way too young. i don't mind the idea of them having phones for emergencies but that's it. every other form of screen time should be severely limited, like 1/2 hour per day or less. and definitely no phone usage other than calls because having the neck hunched forward like they do will have severe negative consequences on bone development and posture

@LisbonMuse @KeepTakingTheSoma @Cousin_Isobel @everlong @Flick @Gnomeshatecheese Yeah my daughter prefers to draw and practice writing so far during ‘free time’ in school. I hope it stays that way, but I doubt it.

@Cousin_Isobel @KeepTakingTheSoma @starsstorm @Flick If anything, devices have been massively dumbed down. That’s a big source of my frustration with them, they’ve become boxes with flashy lights and a few big buttons to push. Forget about actually customising or doing anything more complicated on them. I was thinking about this some more while putting my dinner together, and it occurred to me that claiming that kids will be able to use computers fluently after a childhood filled with smartphones, tablets and macbooks, is roughly the equivalent of saying that after a childhood spent watching television, kids will know how to make TV programmes.

@HebrideanHecate @LisbonMuse @Cousin_Isobel @everlong @starsstorm @Flick @Gnomeshatecheese I remember my daughter coming home after her first day in 6th form to tell me that hardly anyone in her English Lit class admitted reading for pleasure. They were there because they needed the subject pass for uni. As for history, they only need to know a few phrases; systemic racism, decolonise, historical oppression, social construct etc. Oh, and Hitler was really bad.Facts and the ability to think critically = right wing bigotry. My father blames Crosland (among others) and I'm inclined to agree.
