@thomasfuchs I’ve never been able to watch a lot of youtube, so my view is skewed pretty hard toward the …outspoken ones :/

@thomasfuchs I tried Technology Connections a few times. By his own admission he is the "oldest young person" ever - and his crotchetyness and lecturing get in the way for me.Maybe he doesn't tone police his own audience the way you're talking about, but he definitely comes across as paternal and not a little bit patronizing. The midwestern veneer over the lectures isn't folks-y enough to disabuse me of that sensation.🤷♀️

It's always the same pattern:"I don't like this because A" (but written in a much longer way that sounds nice and friendly and very intelligent)"A is maybe your experience, but not the one of many other people""But I really don't like this because A" (slightly less friendly and intelligent)"Try looking at it from other people's perspective who have experience B""You're mean and having bad logic and you're a [mild expletive that wouldn't get you excommunicated]!" (def not friendly)

@wohali @thomasfuchs hi. It me.I'm trying to get better about this, and recognizing when I'm going overboard. As time has gone on, I think my frustration manifests when it feels to me as though solutions and answers are right in front of people, but they are not making the effort to think through them or find them.I can be quite snarky when it feels to me as though people are being obtuse and/or exhibiting learned helplessness. And I know it's off-putting

@wohali @thomasfuchs I'm pretty regretful of my switched outlets video because what to me seemed like a pretty harmless example of fun-poking was perceived by many as quite caustic. And in that one, yeah. I totally get why I seem patronizing. But from my perspective, it seems to me that if you are truly bothered by something, you would put some effort towards eliminating that bother rather than lamenting that the thing exists. And that was the point of the vid.

@wohali @thomasfuchs and I recognize that to some people, that's going to sound like I'm lording my smarts over you.But that's genuinely not what I'm trying to do.I only know what I know because I'm a curious person, and if there's one thing I hope to do, it's to make people more curious about the world around them

@TechConnectify @thomasfuchs Hey, nice to meet you. Thank you for your hard work! :blobreach:Since you seem to want to know more, here's my two cents. This is all opinion, ignore it if it helps, etc.First off: you make great points in your vids, I agree with almost all that I've seen (which is maybe 20 or so). And I even chuckle at some of the worst dad jokes. For someone like me who barely watches YT, that's high praise! 😄 Being an engineer by trade and a curious person myself, I'm not learning much new from your vids - just trying to find a little entertainment, and resources I can hand to others. To wit: I installed heat pumps in my house years ago, and never stopped using granulated dishwasher powder, except when the local store stopped selling it for a year or two (!)On occasion I find your vids belaboured. Sometimes, it feels less like genuine personal enthusiasm and more like preaching. I think striking that balance between strongly stating an opinion and someone interpreting that as you telling them what to do is a hard line to find, e.g.: a friend of mine once said "now, be good, or Tech Connections will post another heat pump lecture we'll all have to sit through." 😞Perhaps I interpret verbosity as preaching in the same way Carl Sagan felt preachy in Cosmos (1980) about the nuclear, pollution, or extinction threats. I know he turned off people he needed to reach with that message. But he certainly had a strong impact on my world view as a kid!The snark bit of your vids can sometimes feel mean-spirited. I think this is what you were getting at just now? I think I've seen enough of your vids to know you're not trying to be mean-spirited, just exasperated with illogical behaviour, but it took a while for me to get to that understanding. And you def. have gotten better over time. 👍 Oh, and I never saw the outlet vid. 😉 Does that help? ❤️

@wohali It does! One thing I'd like you to know, and this may partly stem from you being an engineer, is that you might be viewing my attempts to be complete as verbose. In scriptwriting, I'm generally looking for questions that might arise from information I've just given. Then I answer that question. I want my videos to be approachable for people with no expertise at all, and I think there will always be some conflict between that audience and yourself.

@wohali I don't pretend my success on YT isn't largely luck, but where I will toot my own horn is that I know first and foremost I'm producing entertainment - and that means I need to cater to as wide and audience as possible.Channels (which I could name but won't because yikes) who maintain a barrier-of-approachability by mainly catering to their specific niche are unlikely to break out of that niche unless they start making /fun/ videos for /everybody/

I implore you, fellow middle-aged white men, occasionally consider that you might be wrong about something and listen to other perspectives.Someone telling you your opinion on something is not correct is mostly likely not a personal attack--but an invitation to have a conversation and maybe broaden your horizons. It's actually quite amazing and liberating and refreshing if you change your mind about something.

@thomasfuchs I strive to formulate and hold the best opinions I can, and one of the things that requires is occasionally investigating contrary opinions and why people hold them. But what really outrages me, what really makes me mad, is when people tell me what my opinion is.

@TechConnectify It's definitely a balancing act, and there's a natural tension between being complete (in a single video) and spreading topics over multiple videos. I imagine that also impacts engagement, so it's not simple algebra. There's also a natural tension between explaining a topic and advocating for a particular solution. As I've gotten older I've grown to appreciate the soft sell of "this works for me, maybe it works for you too" more than a more pointed advocacy angle. But that's just me.

@wohali In today's YouTube world, you pretty much can't spread videos out.Somewhat going back to an earlier point, **people do not look for things** and while you can make a playlist, that only helps those who are willing to find it.Case in point: I've had a link to my Twitter on my YT channel and in *every* description since the day I signed up.Constantly, and I mean constantly, people on Twitter would say "I didn't know you had a twitter!!!"

@TechConnectify @wohali I very much enjoy Techmoans rants about this very thing. I miss the puppets. But I understand that not everyone is a connoisseur of exquisite snark.

@thomasfuchs @TechConnectify @wohali I'm one of those that love the snark, but I can definately see how it can be offputting to a lot of people, especially for those who aren't familiar with a particular channel's style or humor...

@wohali And yeah, that's probably part of why I'm crotchety about stuff. It's astonishing how much people miss because they just aren't looking.
