@pixelfed Have I understood correctly that they don't want you to use filters called "meta"? What about all the people using "meta" in CW? According to the online version of Merriam Webster the word has been in use since 1988 - have they actually copyrighted it (and if so, what idiot said yes to that)? I'm still on insta but as soon as I have a bit of time to figure out pixelfed, I'll be swapping. This is encouraging me to find the time sooner rather than later.

@jigbean @pixelfed I think trademarks are fairly complex in terms of rules. Possibly that they are country dependent and so on.Possibly that using the word on its own, for financial gain might be the most risky thing. If it’s just a word as part of another then it’s probably more difficult to challenge.In this case, it’s probably just a company with lots of money, trying it on.

Meta is not the name of the filters, it's the name of the company.If I understand correctly, Pixelfed allegedly copied the weird names of Instagram's filters. Not sure if they also copied the specific settings, and if so, if they copied the implementation. That'd be pretty odd if that was the case.Don't shoot the messenger on this stuff, I'm no fan of copyright, and I've always hated Instagram and I've never had an account on there. Trademarks do have a purpose, though, unique handles for things are useful, and prepending with an "i" is kind of a weaksauce fix. iPixelfed, iMastodon, iPepsi, iiPad, iKleenex are not good names. Grab some stuff from /usr/share/dict/words (re-shuffle if you get any gross ones).@pixelfed

I was thinking filters in the sense of filtering content rather than the sense of adding a filter to a photo, which was probably confusing me even more. I did click through to the github link and try to understand it but that kind of thing is mostly gobbledegook to me.
