       @djtaktix @Techmeme It's technically possible that someone could fork the server software to have an instance that has ads.It's equally technically possible that 1. no one would use those instances and 2. other instances would block them if they tried to push them over the network.

       @djtaktix @Techmeme The oft missed fact (by #clueless #technology #journalists) is that Rochko does not really "own" Mastodon as a service or as a piece of software. At very least, not remotely the way Twitter, FB, etc. are owned.Seems like technology journalists only understand billionaire-run corporations and nothing else, and they seem to think everything is that way, or should be that way.(It's pretty pathetic, frankly)

       @djtaktix @Techmeme lead dev of VLC media player has also turned down hundreds of thousands of Euros to sell out. Maybe a significant factor is both are based in Europe, where even a modest income (by USA standards) can still provide a reasonable quality of life..

       @Techmeme What would they buy that wouldn't instantly turn to dust in their hands? The #Mastodon codebase? Everyone moves to a fork, like happened with LibreOffice. The mastodon.social instance? Everyone just migrates.#ActivityPub? You can't buy a web standard.It reminds me of #investors scrambling for Netscape stock in the late 1990s, thinking they were buying the web.
