I'm pessimistic about the chances of a federated Twitter gaining and sustaining wide adoption. But I could be wrong, and I'd love to be wrong. So in the spirit of contributing rather than just whining, I wrote up a few thoughts.Don't let federation make the experience suck.cc @blaine http://benlog.com/2022/12/28/dont-let-federation-make-the-experience-suck/#federation #web #mastodon

@ben @blaine To convincingly argue that these ux issues must be solved for a federated social network to be sufficiently usable to be successful and beloved by a broad range of the population, it would be good to know why you think these issues didn't keep email from being successful.

@ben @blaine Agree a coordination domain and server would be very useful … but of course comes with real governance issues. If the wrong people get control of it … so how would that be governed? Would be nice if one could apply some version of liquid democracy to it.

@J12t @ben I think my *one and only* personal hard line for federated/decentralized services is that the provision of names must be permissionless (not to be confused with self-sovereign, or to diminish the ability of others to limit communication from an account) and not controlled by any single entity. There's a lot that must follow from that, but if we have control of naming, we have the *ability* to construct usable worlds. If not, we're always back to square one.

@blaine @ben how do you avoid hoarding of names? What keeps somebody from registering all 4 letter names?

@J12t @blaine @ben exactly. This is why global username registries are a bad idea. It seems like it might be good UX but in practice with hoarding it is only good UX for early adopters or people that can afford to acquire names.Federated namespaces are better, but not best. Pet names (ie your contacts list) are better.
