The audacity to call Muskโ€™s acquisition of Twitter the biggest story of the year when Roe v. Wade was overturned. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฌ

@victorwynne @Remittancegirl Musk, with backing of Gulf monarchies, buying Twitter, is a couple of orders of magnitude larger then Roe v. Wade.Roe v. Wade overturn is bad policy that is already killing women.Musk makes enough wrong moves, he kills democracy. And with it any chance of rights for women, blacks, Hispanics, climate, etc.An absolute unmitigated disaster.

@Fieryreddragon @victorwynne @Remittancegirl Please do not put words in my mouth.Musk's purchase of Twitter is an existential threat to democracy. And democracy is the only means we have to fix ANY problem society might have.So attention on that cluster of hazards Musk is enabling must come first.

@nealr @Fieryreddragon @victorwynne @Remittancegirl Democracy without the rule of law is what you get in Turkey! No, Twitter is NOT necessary for democracy, but the rule of law is! By revoking Roe v. Wade, the US Supreme Court Judges have shown that they donโ€™t care about rule of law. If in doubt, next time the Supreme Court might just decide who won the presidential elections in the US. 1/2

@n8chz @imdat @Remittancegirl @victorwynne @Fieryreddragon @nealr Twitter inherently works /against/ #democracy with or w/out Musk b/c access is exclusive (e.g. you cannot tweet to Congress unless you satisfy Twitterโ€™s profit-driven ToS). #Musk actually *helps* democracy by driving #Twitter into the ground. Thanks to Musk there are now 2 Congress reps accessible to the free world: https://freeradical.zone/@koherecoWatchdog/109553991263002831

@nealr @Fieryreddragon @victorwynne @Remittancegirl โ€ฆ we can always replace Twitter with e.g. Mastodon; there were online services before Twitter and there will ones after Twitter. But once the Rule of Law is gone, you can have as much democracy as you want, it will just be a democratically elected autocracy. Or why do you think that Victor Orban and Mateusz Morawiecki insist on calling their system โ€œIlliberal DEMOCRACYโ€?? 2/2

@nealr @Fieryreddragon @victorwynne @Remittancegirl And one should really not confuse the ownership-change of an online service with 70m US-users (active? I dunno, of which probably 50m are male) with revoking the rights of 51% of US population to decide about their own body.In Germany, where I am from, it is only 7% of Germans โ€œusingโ€ Twitter at all. Twitter is not that important to the lives of people, Rule of Law IS!

@nealr Aside from being insensitive to a huge swathe of the population who actually have to deal with the fallout of SCOTUS's horrible decision, the fact that you think Musk buying Twitter is more important than Roe v. Wade being overturned shows a) just how grotesquely overrated Twitter is both in terms of stability and importance and b) just how many people end up mistakenly thinking it is "the global town square". It's not. It's an algorithmically-fueled 280-character bad-take spigot that tries to drive engagement via showing people the most enraging things it can find. Pretending that it's some crucial pillar of stability upholding democracy that Musk can use to topple the world order is simply ignorant. People will move on to bigger, and from what I have seen so far, probably better, things.@victorwynne @Remittancegirl

The replies turned to a discussion of Twitter being the biggest story because it threatens democracy itself. All I can do is laugh at the idea that Twitter is somehow unique in social media.Forcing someone to carry a pregnancy is a violation of Jewish law, and the Constitution guarantees our freedom to practice religion, and freedom from the dictates of other religions. The reversal of Roe is a violation of the Constitution, and I cannot think of a greater threat to democracy than that.

@GreenFire @victorwynne #GlobalWarming / #ClimateChange will never be taken seriously by the masses until an economically viable solution can be implemented. As soon as you tell people (who are already struggling financially) that we must raise the cost of living in order to save the planet, they become hostile & indifferent (& politicians know this).

@darnell @victorwynne If they understood the ramifications we face, they would certainly be pushing for policies that would stop the rich people from endangering their children I like to believe. If the economic justice solution is your major concern about our #ClimateCrisis I would love for you to examine some of the resources on the subject that @citizensclimate has available on their proposed Carbon Fee & Dividend proposal.Like I said though, the cause is well understood to be wealthy people so many of us are trying the best we can to not put anymore burden on them (of which I'm one).

@chiclet @victorwynne @GreenFire Most people are more concerned with Meghan & Harry (who somehow achieved celebrity status) than the Royals. Outside of the United Kingdom ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง they are not considered a major story at all. Most people do not even bring it up nor do they care to know any info, at least from my travels in North America & Africa.Democracy is in the news due to elections & the second wave of authoritarians gaining power worldwide.

@darnell @victorwynne @GreenFire The US is an outlier I think when it comes to the Queen since the US openly rebelled against the crown and won independence. Canada and Australia tell a very different story. India a very different story. All had much more attention to this story.Elections happen all over the world every year. Some shift left, some shift right. "Framing" elections as an existential battle for democracy is mostly an American thing, specifically because of US politics in recent years.

The Govt doesn't want to bruise the economy by declaring the level of emergency needed. @the_Effekt @darnell @chiclet @victorwynne This and many other climate scientists hold out much hope.I'm not going to debate predictions of human behaviour. I think that it is an unpredictable species. There was a lot of progress made in 2022 legislatively and because of #Ukraine that will change the landscape significantly next year that I wish more people would hype up a lot more in order to encourage more of the hope that I would like to think we agree we need.
