@stux is it accelerating? I know the earth's curvature would make it seem like that from this angle, but even considering that, it still looks like it's faster after the 20th century. Feels like a bad sci-fi movie premise.

@stux Below is a map with the local magnetic variations across the globe. For places in red (East variation) add the variation to a compass reading to get orientation relative to true (geographic) north. For places in blue (West variation) subtract the variation. For example, if you live in a place with a 20° East variation and your compass reads 340°, then you are oriented exactly to true North (360°).https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/WMM/data/WMM2020/WMM2020_D_BoZ_MILL.pdf

@yangwenli @stux but what about the molten balls of metals rolling around inside the earth, messing with our magnetic poles? What about centrifugal force? The article said the single ball cleaved in two, but not why. Ice age might be moot if we spin off somewhere new. It's wigging me out, this. š

@4f_koultouras @stux geographical poles are set to the axis of rotation, which also happens to move around constantly. Defining it as some historic average is mostly fine though compared to magnetic poles since compass bearings are a little bit more relevant to people in general.

@stux Though technically speaking the magnetic pole near the north pole is actually a south pole in terms of magnets because north poles of magnets point to it, and opposite poles of magnets attract.

@stux The other pole--the one that marks the Earth's rotational axis--is moving also. And this shift may be caused by humans. Specifically, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet has caused a change in distribution of mass thus altering the rotational dynamics. https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-shifting-earth-rotation-2016-4

@stux @Lampje The polarity reversals of Earth's magnetic field happen at irregular intervals! Wikipedia has a nice little diagram of polarities during the past 5 million years:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversalFun fact: This information is quite easy to reconstruct, since freezing lava records the current magnetic moment you can "simply" move a magnetometer over the ocean floor from a mid-oceanic ridge outward and read off the polarity at increasing age š¤

@stux It's remarkable to realize that through the Age of Exploration, magnetic north was as far as that from true north. It also hardly moved at all during all those years.
