       Recently went #DistroSurfing to look at some #Linux desktop environments. Did I enjoy your favourite or not? :P https://superjamie.github.io/2022/12/24/distro-surfing-2022 #MATE #Cinnamon #XFCE #GNOME #Pantheon #LXQt #Budgie #KDE

@suprjami Nice one! After many years on Windowmaker, I was on KDE for some months, and while I still like it I realized that I actually want less hand-holding (monitor config, etc - I'm happy to do that myself with xrandr). Happy with #sway at the moment.I would be curious about a session in the company (or a Linux user group) where people show each other with which environments and configs they settled.

@globalc I stole most of my keybindings are usage patterns from i3, so Sway would be interesting to try. I'll try find a LiveCD with it. Start a survey at work, there hasn't been one for a good few years. I recall it came up every so often in the distant past.

@suprjami The more I think about that, the more I like it. Will go ahead and be the first one doing a session to introduce the desktop and basic tools I use for my job in January. Will announce to supporters in advance, schedule for a Friday afternoon, people free to attend/ask questions via video confcall, and record and put onto the intranet.Maybe you want to be next then, we could also do ice-bucket style and nominate people we are curious about :)

@globalc "Show your work environment" could be interesting. I'd also show some Vim and stuff. I like the idea of nominating the next person too.

@suprjami @globalc Every now and then I try #Swaywm, and I like it in principle, but there's always something missing that makes me turn back to #KDE / #GNOME.Now they figured the lockscreen + PAM integration, but how about suspending the laptop lid close? How about autoconnecting Bluetooth devices and moiunting USB sticks? How about IMEs? How about HiDPI? How about remembering the configuration of external displays and layout?

Perhaps there are solutions floating around to address each one of these little issues, but I expect distros to come up with a reasonable defaults for the #Sway desktop session that can still be customized by the user.@suprjami @globalc #linuxdesktop #distros

@codewiz @globalc For years now I've been using MATE desktop with i3-like keybindings and usage pattern (always maximised or tiled left/right). Before that I used the same keybindings with Openbox and mate-settings-daemon. I use both of those for the reasons you said. That's been very productive for me. I agree it's nice to have all those conveniences.

@codewiz Running sway here, with all features I need:Suspend works nicely, reconnecting Bluetooth headset, mounting usb sticks - but the pieces involved are mostly independent of sway.I'm back on fcitx for Japanese input, but also the long standing bug for ibus got solved recently. Not using HiDPI, would not be surprised if Xorg did better there. Also no comment on remembering monitor layouts, I'm mostly on one and occasionally on 2.My notes are on https://fluxcoil.net/wiki/software/sway .@suprjami @src

#swaywm 1.8 came out just a few days ago. With #Debian, you might have to build it from source (or switch to unstable).@src @suprjami @globalc

Nope. Not even #Debian sid would have it yet. It's still in experimental:https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=sway&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all@src @suprjami @globalc
